New look at Einstein's brain pictures show his genius

Joanna Carver, reporter

Fig02.jpgThe images of Einstein's brain are published in Falk, Lepore & Noe (2012, The cerebral cortex of Albert Einstein: a description and preliminary analysis of unpublished photographs, Brain (DOI: 10.1093/brain/aws295) and are reproduced here with permission from the National Museum of Health and Medicine, Silver Spring, MD.

The mystique surrounding Albert Einstein's brain as the source of his intellectual power seems to only have intensified since his death in 1955 at age 76. You can even poke at his grey matter in an iPad app. When the Nobel Prize-winning physicist, whose special theory of relativity changed the way we look at physics, died of an aneurysm, his son gave permission for his father's brain to be removed and studied.

It was dissected and photographed by pathologist Thomas Harvey, and in 2010 14 of his photos were rediscovered when they were donated to the National Museum of Health and Medicine. According to a study published last week in the neurology journal Brain, Einstein's remarkable intelligence could be attributed to his prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for speech as well as imagining events and simulating their consequences. His is dramatically expanded from a normal brain.

The researchers also noticed that there is a large knob on his motor cortex, representing Einstein's early extensive practice playing the violin.

After it was photographed, Einstein's brain was divided into 240 sections and mapped so that observers of the blocks could understand which sections of the brain they were looking at. One hundred and eighty of the brain blocks are at the University Medical Centre of Princeton, but many more are unaccounted for, raising the possibility that there's a piece of Einstein's brain in your grandparent's attic.

Welton Arthur to stamp his opponents in The Sheffield Stadium - Bettor

Welton Arthur to stamp his opponents in The Sheffield Stadium Stayers

Welton Arthur, who was mighty impressive last time, is geared up to continue his good run in the Sheffield Stadium Stayers on Tuesday. Simply oozes class, the black dog has been performing magnificently over the past few weeks.

After going the goods at Newcastle, E. Parker?s trainee reached Sheffield at the start of this month. He gained good momentum by travelling nicely in the trials. Continuing the marvellous work, he did a great job on his penultimate outing, when missing the gold only by a neck?s distance.

A fine run boosted up his confidence, which he utilised last time around. In a 660 metres contest, the son of Head Bound always led the proceedings, and finally seized the first rank by four and a half lengths.

Having made a couple of great rides especially the latest one, Welton Arthur is in great momentum, and can easily get the better of the rivals in today?s clash. Among his opponents are: Farloe Kyle, Aghaburren Paddy, Cape West, Storming Coco and Luke My Lad.

According to the plan, the open event will be kicked off at 19:43 GMT. A handsome prize of 200 pounds is reserved for the successful runner.

Farloe Kyle is the second best choice for betting. The fawn dog won at Belle Vue last Tuesday, looking solid to offer more. B. Draper?s charge is certainly a pacey hound and if he gets a clear passage, his chances will surely be very bright.

Cape West is in the best form of her life. She defeated Welton Arthur on November 4th, when taking the big prize by a neck?s distance. But she needs an extra special effort to trouble the judge this time.

Luke My Lad stays well, but struggles to match this class. On his latest race at the open level, the white and black dog was third on the chart. Aghaburren Paddy can show good early pace, but it will be very hard for him to upset the plans. Storming Coco is a nice sort, and could be a big player if performing at best. We wish all the best to the contestants.

Susquehanna Township family wants neighbor's deteriorating home to

The 2 a.m. boom woke Oswill Toppin and his family. Hurricane Sandy was pounding the midstate, and the side wall of the neighboring house had just come crashing down.

?We were scared out of our lives with this explosion,? said Toppin, a Susquehanna Twp. resident. ?The whole side came down. We couldn?t even sleep.?

The front and side walls of the duplex at 4314 N. Sixth St. spilled to the ground the night of Oct. 29, but the home can be made structurally sound, township officials said.

Owner Vincent Minnici of Lower Paxton Twp. said restoration began before the walls collapsed and will continue.

In August, Susquehanna Twp. declared the deteriorating duplex as unfit for human habitation, and township engineers signed off on rebuilding plans prepared by Minnici?s engineer.

Not repairing the property made ?the failure of the front structural wall a possibility,? said an Oct. 23 letter to the township from HRG Engineering.

?Unfortunately, the storm caused those exterior walls to come down a little sooner and not how they wanted it to,? said Daniel F. Long, the HRG engineer on the project.

Based on an inspection after the walls collapsed, Long said the restoration plans remain viable. They call for attaching siding to a new interior frame, he said.

That frame, visible after the walls came down, probably kept the building from collapsing, township officials said.

?Without that, they would have had a lot bigger problem,? Long said.

The three-story house looms over the compact, tidy home where Toppin lives with his wife and four children, ages 18 to 30. The night the walls fell, one daughter moved into her sister?s room, away from the damaged house.

Toppin wants the property to be torn down.

?I?m scared because winter is coming,? he said. ?If snow falls ? the heaviness of the snow ? this is going to come down.?

Susquehanna Twp. School District believes that children assigned to a nearby bus stop at Sixth and Lucknow streets don?t cross in front of the property to get there, Business Manager Michael Frentz said.

Township health and building officials ordered Minnici to clean the debris and secure the house against weather and vandals by the end of Friday.

When the repaired house passes inspection, the township can allow occupants to return, Township Manager Gary Myers said.

?They can fix it,? Myers said. ?They can rebuild it to make it habitable, with the proper permits and proper inspections, and once they make the proper repairs and get the certificate of occupancy, then they?ll be allowed to have it occupied again.?

The duplex?s twin, at 4312 N. Sixth St., also got a red placard declaring it unfit for human habitation in September. At an Oct. 25 hearing, the township agreed to remove the placard while owner Art Rowell of Middle Paxton Twp. submits plans, gets building permits and makes repairs.

Rowell, owner of Art Rowell Properties in Harrisburg, agreed to keep the home unoccupied during repairs.

Minnici blamed the deterioration at 4314 N. Sixth St. on a ?handyman-type? occupant who intended to buy the house but backed out of the deal.

?He started some work in there and did more damage than actually fixing it up,? Minnici said. ?He wasn?t a contractor but thought he was a contractor.?

Minnici said he?s spending $60,000 to $70,000 on repairs and hopes to be done by ?by spring at the latest.?

?It?s going to be totally re-sided, and the whole thing, from top to bottom, is going to be pretty much redone,? he said.

Either homeowner?s failure to comply with township orders could draw criminal code violations and fines, township Solicitor Bruce Foreman said. Any decision to condemn and raze the properties would be based on engineers? findings, but ?because both of the owners have indicated that they are going to bring it into compliance, that?s what we?re going to work on,? Foreman said.

Toppin said he continues to worry.

?I?m scared for my life and the lives of my family,? he said.

Protests Against U.S. Support for Israeli Military In Ithaca

Yesterday, I came upon a political demonstration by the side of state rout 13, heading into Ithaca, New York. The protest, held by a coalition including students from Cornell University, Ithaca College, Catholic Worker and Jewish Voice for Peace, was one of an ongoing series of daily demonstrations being held in opposition to U.S. aid for the Israeli military.

gaza protest ithaca new york 2012At the protest, I spoke with Beth Harris, professor in the Ithaca College Department of Politics and member of Jewish Voice for Peace. When I asked her what the protest was all about, she explained, ?The United States really allows this to happen, or actually encourages it by not having any kind of human rights restrictions on the massive aid that the U.S. gives Israel. So, for us as U.S. citizens, and for many of us as Jews, we don?t want to be complicit with the ongoing massacres in Gaza.?

Harris mentioned three specific demands of the protest. ?We?re calling for an end to U.S. aid to Israel,? she explained. ?We?re also calling for, as long as Israel is receiving U.S. aid, most of which is military aid, and most of it is used to actually buy weapons from the United States, that there be conditions on aid, like with any other country, that there be an investigation, specifically, on the aid that is received.? A third goal was an end to military action by Israel: ?We?re calling for an end to the attack right now on Gaza, but also the general policy of attacks on civilians, and that there should be accountability.?

Harris made it clear that her group is against violence against civilians by Palestinians in Gaza as well. ?We oppose all violence toward civilians on either side. The rights of all should be protected, and the Gaza rocket fire, they don?t really have the ability to direct it, so they don?t know who they?ll hit. We oppose that,? she said.

With violence between Israel and Gaza continuing to escalate, we can expect to see this protest will be back out on the street tomorrow.

Teens paint mural for Good Shepherd Lutheran Church's live nativity

The 45-foot by 12-foot mural will serve as the backdrop for the live nativity.

Kelsea Dvorak, 15, of New Freedom, and Gary Fissel of York paint in the buildings of Bethlehem in a nativity mural Saturday. Members and friends of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Manchester Township are painting a nativity mural depicting the star of Bethlehem shining over the village and surrounding hills. The mural, which measures 12 feet by 45 feet and has consumed almost 20 gallons of paint, will be used as a backdrop for the church's live Nativity scene on Dec. 9. (DAILY RECORD/SUNDAY NEWS - CHRIS DUNN)

Since October, five teenage girls have been giving up sleeping in on the weekends to sprawl on the floor of Howe Wood Products in East Manchester Township in paint-splattered socks and bare feet.

The 45-foot by 12-foot mural they have been working on will be the backdrop for Good Shepherd Lutheran Church's annual live nativity, "A Journey Thru Bethlehem," in Manchester Township.

"It's huge," said Kelsea Dvorak, 16, of New Freedom. "I did not realize it was going to be this big."

With more than 125 hours of work so far, the mural is almost complete. Dvorak and Kelsey Fissel, 15, of York, painted windows and shaded in buildings Saturday while Liz Lynch, 15, of Red Lion, started adding sheep to the other side of the canvas. Kathleen Byrne, 15, of York, and Alexis Shirey, 15, of York, also worked on the project.

"We'd probably be with each other anyway," Shirey said Or, "sadly getting homework done" joked Dvorak. The friends are all sophomores at York Catholic.

While they enjoy painting and contributing to the community, the reason they keep going back is simple.

"It's always fun," Fissel said.

Fissel's father, Gary, is a member of Good Shepherd's Outreach program.

"I thought it would save us some construction time each year. It turned out to be a project," said Gary Fissel, who organized the mural project.

The backdrop will add additional detail and realism to the live nativity, Fissel said. In its fourth year, the nativity features actors dressed as the characters of the nativity, as well as live cows, sheep and alpacas. Last year the event attracted more than 500 people and the church hopes to double that this year.

"We want to really reach out to our community," Fissel said. "Outreach is something that is important to Good Shepherd."

The live nativity grows every year, and the group already has plans for what they can add to the backdrop next

year.

If the live nativity continues the way it has, some day the young women will be able to visit with families of their own and show their children what they helped create, Gary Fissel said.

"It looks really good here, but I think it will be so different when it's actually hanging up," Kelsey Fissel said.

If you go

"A Journey Thru Bethlehem" is a free event and will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 9 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2121 Roosevelt Ave. in Manchester Township.

Dodocase Hardcover for iPad Mini ? Review

After much searching for a case that I liked through the usual UK accessories channels I found that I could not find anything that suited me. So I extended my search to include imports and I found Dodocase from Sunny San Francisco. Now I had seen some of their work before and they come very highly recommended in the industry. I had initially written them off as being too expensive, what with having to import it from the US. However after some calculations I decided to go for it.

What we have here is the Dodocase Hardcover which comes in at $48.94 or ?31.48 including shipping to the UK this makes it cheaper than the Smart Covers you can buy here and I think it is worth a lot more than that. Dodocase make covers for all sorts of tablets including the whole iPad range and the Nexus 7.

The case itself is a hand made affair and is made using traditional book binding techniques to give the handmade moleskin look. My first impressions of the case are very good and it makes the iPad Mini feel great in the hand whilst also making it look like a Moleskin notebook. It does not add very much weight to the tablet or thickness. The case supports having the iPad standing up and also a typing mode.

The standing position is very good but the same is not the case with the typing position although it is by no means bad. The cover attaches itself via very sticky adhesive similar to that found on the Clingo car and desk mounts that we have tested here on the site before. I feel very confident in how secure the iPad is held and I cannot see it coming loose any time soon.

So if you are looking for a case that is a little bit different and you don?t mind waiting a bit (mine took two weeks to arrive) then I can thoroughly recommend the Dodocase Hardcover, if you want something a little more secure then it might be worth checking out the Dodocase Classic as this is designed to protect from impact as well.

Check them out as they are well worth a look.

White House: Israel has right to defend itself

by JIM KUHNHENN

Associated Press

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 11:17 AM

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) -- The White House says it believes Israel "has the right to defend itself" against attack and that the Israelis will make their own decisions about their "military tactics and operations."

A top aide to President Barack Obama tells reporters traveling with the president to Asia on Air Force One that the U.S. and Israel both want an end to the rocket fire that's coming from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

Deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes says Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agree that "de-escalation is preferred," provided that Hamas stops firing into Israel.
Obama has spoken with the leaders of Egypt and Turkey, too.

Rhodes says they "have the ability to play a constructive role in engaging Hamas" and encouraging a de-escalation of the attacks.

Oregon university enrollment hits all-time high

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? Enrollment in Oregon's public universities has hit an all-time high, but the growth rate has slowed after four years of spikes, according to data released by the Oregon University System.

More than 101,000 students enrolled at eight campuses this fall, an increase of 1 percent over last year. The growth came almost exclusively from Oregon State University's Corvallis campus, which added 1,400 students. University of Oregon had the next-largest growth, adding 144.

Four campuses shrank, led by Southern Oregon University, which has 263 fewer students this year. Portland State was down 227 but remained Oregon's largest university.

Oregon's universities saw enrollment explode in recent years as students sought refuge from the Great Recession, growing by 3.5 percent last year and more than 5 percent in each of the three years before that. This year's 1.1 percent growth rate is the lowest since 2006, when enrollment was essentially flat.

Economic improvements have probably contributed to this year's lower growth, said Bob Kieran, associate vice chancellor for institutional research at the Oregon University System. The number of graduate students fell nearly 2 percent this year.

The number of seniors graduating from Oregon high schools has also plateaued, Kieran said.

"Our five-year growth is at 23.3 percent, just about the size of another major university," Kieran said. "So we have had unusually strong growth. If you look at five year growth periods over the last 40 or 50 years, they're not usually in that ballpark. They're usually much smaller."

Oregon State University's substantial growth came largely from new nonresident and international students, along with expansion of its online classes, university officials said.

Oregon Institute of Technology added 90 students and Oregon State's new Cascades campus in Bend added 37, boosting its total enrollment to 801 students. Eastern Oregon University shrank by 90 students and Western by 30.
