Google wants to change your reality with Ingress, a mobile game played out in real life

Google wants to change your reality with Ingress, a mobile game played out in real life

All the viral ads courtesy of Niantic Labs told us something was coming, and now its here -- an alternate reality game from Google called Ingress. The theme is one of worldwide mind control, and it'll be played out in real life, where you'll be a part of one of two teams which either embrace or fight "the power" -- The Enlightened or The Resistance, respectively. With a companion mobile app installed, you'll venture out into the world collecting energy known as "Exotic Matter" (XM), found at real locations. This can then be spent claiming, stealing or reinforcing "portals," which are positioned at key public places. Teamwork will be essential, as the goal is to create zones controlled by your faction, and attacking those occupied by the enemy. One team will eventually win, although this end point is expected to be a year to 18 months down the line.

John Hanke of Niantic Labs said some of the inspiration for Ingress came from JJ Abrams, and hardcore Lost fans may remember a similarly cryptic internet 'game' focused around the show. The Ingress app is available on Google Play today, with an iOS version in the pipe, and if you want you play, sign up at the source below to request access. Your mobile device will provide you with an overview of your local battlefield when you're out and about, but a web client can keep you up to date on the global war while you're sat at a computer. Check out the video and app screenshots below, and if you're still confused as to what it's all about -- well, that's how they want you to feel.

Constitution Plaza Leading Contender For Relocating UConn Campus

A Hartford architecture firm has been hired by the University of Connecticut to evaluate the former Travelers Education Center on Constitution Plaza in downtown Hartford ? seen as among the top sites to house the university?s relocated West Hartford campus.

The University of Connecticut is taking a closer look at 200 Constitution Plaza, the former Travelers Education Center in downtown Hartford. Photo by Kenneth R. Gosselin/kgosselin@courant.com

The university last week announced that it would move the West Hartford campus to downtown Hartford within a year, but it didn?t name a location. The university said it was still evaluating sites.

UConn spokeswoman Stephanie Reitz told me today that the university is ?still negotiating and doing due diligence on potential sites.?

The UConn Board of Trustees Thursday approved spending $243,524 to hire JCJ Architecture PC to study the education center at 200 Constitution Plaza. The structure is vacant and has been on the market for lease or sale.

The education center is among three downtown Hartford sites seen as potential locations for the school. The others are Connecticut River Plaza and One Talcott Plaza.

The ?Lucky? Ones ? An interview with personal finance whiz Sarah ...

Time for another edition of The ?Lucky? Ones series, and you know what that means?it?s?almost-but-not-quite?the weekend! Last night was the Mobbies awards, and I had an awesome time meeting fellow bloggers and attempting to identify them based on my memory of their Twitter pictures. I also maaaaybe have good news to report back (spoiler alert: I WON!!), but I?ll save it for the recap that will come this weekend. Right now, I?ve got an excellent interview lined up. Meet personal finance blogger Sarah Greesonbach!

It should be noted that Sarah Greesonbach isn?t just a personal finance blogger. She also writes about life, love, careers, and design, among other things. But it?s her passion for smart money managing that sets her apart. Whether doling out advice on surviving unemployment or drinking on the cheap at Starbucks, Sarah?s expert tips make even the most adverse-to-budgeting willing to reconsider the daily to-go latte.

Before blogging, Sarah was an English teacher, and she?s currently pursuing ventures in young adult fiction. By day, she works as a quality of life support?liaison?for military families and finds just enough spare time in her busy schedule to read, exercise, and experiment with slow-cooking.?

?

And here she is!

Finance can be a very unsexy topic. How did your finance blogging get its start, and how do you keep the content fresh and relatable?

This is tricky, because some would argue that there?s no way for personal finance to be fresh and relatable because the basics are so basic: spend less, earn more. And the numbers involved could keep things pretty dry. But that?s kind of like saying we should stop talking about health because we all know about exercising and eating right. That doesn?t make it any easier!

I got started because I found myself with a lot of opinions and questions and I needed an outlet for it. There are so many permutations and perspectives of life and finance because everything is new the first time you experience it for yourself. So while I could read a book about a person clawing their way out of debt, I could also read a blog about it and write one of my own and all three would be original stories.

What keeps my content fresh and hopefully relatable is the attempt share my own personal story of debt, career, and relationships to make sure I?m not making any stupid mistakes.

Would you mind sharing some of your own financial ups and downs? How did they affect you on a more personal level?

I have been very, very lucky to have not felt the consequence of most of my bad decisions. I have a student loan and a car loan that I wish I had put more thought into, but I have also had gainful employment to pay for these things without severe financial discomfort.

The ups and downs (and the personal realizations) have been more about realizing the freedom I am missing out on by having these loans. For example, did you know that if you don?t have expenses you don?t need to earn an income? Like? if you had no car loan, student loan, rent bill, or property to insure, you could literally travel the world and freelance on a comparatively tiny sum of money? My college self did not know that, and so my late-20s self cannot do that. A good lesson to learn. If you want any kind of freedom, pay attention to your money.

Have you had to make any sacrifices along the way? Why is it important for anyone to be willing to do so?

I struggle with some serious workaholic/OCD problems, so if anything the only thing that feels like a sacrifice is to not be working, cleaning, or doing something productive. In that sense, I have made sacrifices in limiting the amount of work to do for my health. To stop working, put down the computer and relax and destress. is something I struggle with (and fail with) daily, but I am getting better about it.

Apparently human beings were made to enjoy being alive, not work themselves to death. Who knew? And it stinks but it is so important to reach that breaking point where you find out what is too much ? it helps you to realign your priorities and make sure you are working on the things that matter. For example: a perfectly-in-order bathroom and clean laundry? Not more important than spooning my husband.

Is achieving financial stability a matter of trial and error, or are there any fail-proof ways to lead a comfortable life?

I would like to think that the whole of society is accruing more and more information every century and that that information will be effectively organized and stored and lead to never making mistakes ever again?..but yeah, that?s not happening. So it will always be a slightly educated trial and error. But the trick is that you can decide to be comfortable in the face of trial and error, it is a matter of what Rainer Maria Rilke says about ?loving the unresolved question itself?. Because if you can be happy while you?re trying to figure things out, figuring things out will be the icing on the cake.

What are some of the most common indulgences you see other people buy into?

Stuff. Just stuff. We downgraded from a 4-bedroom house to a 2-bedroom apartment and I can?t even remember all the crap we used to own that we now make do without. I?m sure when we have kids we?ll need more, but it?s so refreshing to go home and just see things I need or want ? no wondering where to put something or moving things to get to another thing. It also saves us money to not be constantly shopping for things to cover our home space with. Our decor isn?t utilitarian, by any stretch, but we?re slowly swapping out the unnecessities for necessities and really enjoying the process. It also takes me about two hours to do all of our laundry with a half-size washing machine. That makes me very happy.

What?s the best thing a young professional new to the working world can do for themselves in terms of money and establishing independence?

I failed financially for a long time because my goals were so unspecific. Even though I heard the ?save, save, save? motto from my parents and friends, it never seemed real to me so I never really saved. But there are two quick ways to start caring a lot about money:

1 ? Add up how much you have made in the past 3 years and compare it to your savings account. For example, as a teacher I made a little over a 100G in 2-3 years. It?s easy to think about blowing $50 on dinner or a few hundred on groceries, but when you look back on three years and say one hundred thousand dollars passed through my hands, and I have nothing to show for it, finances get really real really quickly.

2 ? Set your first starter-goal to save up two pay checks. This is such a huge freedom-thing. No one should feel trapped in a job or so stressed about being fired or laid off that they have stress dreams. Find the number it would take for you and your spouse to leisurely job hunt for a month and save that amount. The day that we officially saved enough money to cover one paycheck was very emotional for me. The thought that I could get fired or laid off and ? while it would suck and be stressful ? we would literally be able to pay our bills and have food for a few weeks was an incredible feeling (and seems so simple and obvious now!).

You also blog on a number of other topics, like careers, relationships, and design. Explain your passion for these and how they all tie in together in your life and blog.

My guiding light has always been the hope that someone else out there has the same questions I have. Why some things are so easy for other people but so hard for me, or vice versa. So when it comes to ideas for writing, it?s a matter of what?s been on my mind lately ? making friends and being a friend, having a successful career and choosing a professional direction, and then sometimes just struggles with blog design and social media. Even though these are random bits of life, the thing they have in common is me experiencing them and wondering about them.

How do you stay motivated to keep writing constantly on top of a demanding day job?

I am motivated by my desire to create meaningful and useful work.

After college, I went through a very long dry spell of putting everything I have into my career, leaving very little for myself or anything creative. So when my career as a teacher turned out to be toxic for me, it was a huge let down and I struggled for a long time to get back to feeling like myself.

Writing has been the only constant for me. When things were good or when things were bad, in the back of my mind I could hear all the professors and supportive people I?ve known saying write, write, write. And it?s true. A crappy poem or an illogical paragraph is embarrassing, but it?s something you have created and put into the world. Not to get all High Fidelity on you, but deciding to have a voice and be a part of the creative output is something I am very proud of and that I try to remind myself of daily. Now, hopefully after a while it will be good stuff you?re putting out. But even if it?s not, at the end of your work day you can look back and say I birthed that and it is mine.?

So, when I get home from a long day and a long commute of working for someone else, it?s a life-affirming and energizing practice to put my time into something that is for me and my loved ones. And it is a kind of stress release, too: when I get down about people who are having (what appears to be) crazier adventures than mine or making tons more money, I am able to have a certain amount of pride that I created something and that I am doing something special to me, too.

Describe your path to reaching your dream job. How can others do the same?

You would think it would be as simple as finding out what you like to do and finding a job that matches that description, but I learned the hard way that you won?t like doing anything very long if it is with the wrong people. So, my goal in life is to find my people?where are the people I want to be (and be with) hanging out and interacting? As a teacher, I was doing what I loved (talking about English and explaining things) but the people I was with all day hated English. It broke me down. So I am looking for that perfect combination of words and complementary people.

The best advice that has come my way was over on Brazen Life a few weeks ago where a writer suggested that finding the perfect job is much like finding the perfect spouse. And it makes so much sense ? jobs are almost as different as people, so how could you possibly know anything about your dream job until you find it (or create it). So the way to be successful is to find a job that you share interests with and try it out. I think it is very common for the new generation to job hop 3-5 times before finding the right fit.

What do you love most about what you do?

After 28 years of living, all I know about myself is that I like communicating ideas through writing. Sometimes that?s personal finance writing, and sometimes it?s as simple as crafting the perfect (and I mean perfect!) email! So, in my current job I get to do a lot of emailing and coordinating, and that is very satisfying to me.

Are there any books you?d recommend to anyone looking for a way to improve their financial destiny?

How?s this for being cheeky: any book at all. Read instead of going out to dinner. Read instead of going shopping for fun. Read instead of paying $10 on a movie ticket, then talk to your friends about it over tea in your own house. This will improve your spiritual, emotional, and psychological destiny, and the savings will help with your finances, too.

?

Canada snubbed by People's Sexiest Man Alive list

Channing Tatum, as previously predicted, is People?s Sexiest Man Alive for 2012, and joining him on the magazine?s annual shortlist of the best pecks, dimples and swoony soundbites are Blake Shelton, Chris Hemsworth, Max Greenfield, Ben Affleck, Richard Gere, Matt Bomer, Oscar Pistorius, Denzel Washington, Damian Lewis, Paul Rudd and last year?s winner Bradley Cooper.

Speaking as Canadians, there are some problems with this list.

But instead of spending 5,000 words debating whether Richard Gere is still capable of making thermal underpants tingle from Vancouver Island to P.E.I., let?s reduce things to one, central complaint:

Where is Ryan Gosling?!

To be fair, Baby Goose is buried somewhere inside People?s Sexiest Man Alive issue ? in a runners-up list titled ?Hot Dogs.? (It is, BTW, a list of stars? who are hot? and own dogs.)

This, readers, is how People treats the people?s choice for sexiest man alive. (Please refer to the #OccupySexy movement of 2011.)

This, readers, is how People treats Canadians.

The London, Ontario-born Gosling didn?t make the list, but neither did a single man whose sexiness was born, cultivated and buffed into an airbrushed sheen in the True North Strong and Free. (Still, they?ve at least looked to sexy men living and breathing outside of American borders. The list includes a Brit (Damian Lewis); an Australian (Chris Hemsworth); a South African (Oscar Pistorius).)

If People keeps insisting that Bradley Cooper rates as one of the Sexiest Men Alive ? two years running ? because of his ?fluency in French,? then there?s a whole bilingual country of sexy-men they?ve completely overlooked.

Starting with Gosling, we?ve compiled a gallery of a few more famous men who are widely considered to be sexy, alive ? and Canadian. (Check it out above.)

This year, the #OccupySexy movement is more than an American issue.

Have your say!

New injectable gels toughen up after entering the body

ScienceDaily (Nov. 15, 2012) ? Gels that can be injected into the body, carrying drugs or cells that regenerate damaged tissue, hold promise for treating many types of disease, including cancer. However, these injectable gels don't always maintain their solid structure once inside the body.

MIT chemical engineers have now designed an injectable gel that responds to the body's high temperature by forming a reinforcing network that makes the gel much more durable, allowing it to function over a longer period of time.

The research team, led by Bradley Olsen, an assistant professor of chemical engineering, described the new gels in a recent issue of the journal Advanced Functional Materials. Lead author of the paper is Matthew Glassman, a graduate student in Olsen's lab. Jacqueline Chan, a former visiting student at MIT, is also an author.

Olsen and his students worked with a family of gels known as shear thinning hydrogels, which have a unique ability to switch between solid-like and liquid-like states. When exposed to mechanical stress -- such as being pushed through an injection needle -- these gels flow like fluid. But once inside the body, the gels return to their normal solid-like state.

However, a drawback of these materials is that after they are injected into the body, they are still vulnerable to mechanical stresses. If such stresses make them undergo the transition to a liquid-like state again, they can fall apart.

"Shear thinning is inherently not durable," Olsen says. "How do you undergo a transition from not durable, which is required to be injected, to very durable, which is required for a long, useful implant life?"

The MIT team answered that question by creating a reinforcing network within their gels that is activated only when the gel is heated to body temperature (37 degrees Celsius).

Shear thinning gels can be made with many different materials (including polymers such as polyethylene glycol, or PEG), but Olsen's lab is focusing on protein hydrogels, which are appealing because they can be designed relatively easily to promote biological functions such as cellular adhesion and cell migration.

The protein hydrogels in this study consist of loosely packed proteins held together by links between protein segments known as coiled coils, which form when two or three helical proteins coil into a ropelike structure.

The MIT researchers designed their hydrogel to include a second reinforcing network, which takes shape when polymers attached to the ends of each protein bind together. At lower temperatures, these polymers are soluble in water, so they float freely in the gel. However, when heated to body temperature, they become insoluble and separate out of the watery solution. This allows them to join together and form a sturdy grid within the gel, making it much more durable.

The researchers found that gels with this reinforcing network were much slower to degrade when exposed to mechanical stress and were significantly stiffer.

Another advantage of these gels is that they can be tuned to degrade over time, which would be useful for long-term drug release. The researchers are now working on ways to control this feature, as well as incorporating different types of biological functions into the gels.

The research was funded by the U.S. Army Research Office through MIT's Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies (ISN). Potential applications of these nanostructured gels to soldier medicine include preventing blood loss, accelerating wound healing and protecting against infections and disease.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says he has no evidence that the scandal that ended former Gen. David Petraeus' career had a negative impact on national security.

In his first comments on the scandal, Obama tells a White House news conference that from what he's seen, no classified information was disclosed that would harm national security.

The president spoke five days after Petraeus resigned as head of the Central Intelligence Agency after disclosing he had an affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell.

LanPercept, a new Marie Curie Initial Training Network funded through the 7th EU Framework Programme, will develop cutting edge techniques to understand vision-language mapping across the life-span in typically and atypically developing populations. New tools and training software will be tested to help disabled and elderly people negotiate the translation between vision and language.

The network will train 11 PhD researchers and 4 postdoctoral researchers across 8 leading academic and 7 industrial and private sector partners in Europe. The project starts in January 2013 and lasts for four years.

Targeting marginalization of people with disabilities and the aging population

The network brings together professionals from psychology, neuroscience and linguistics in an attempt to identify behavioral and brain mechanisms that are involved in mapping visual information and language in everyday situations. The knowledge gained will be used to develop innovative testing and training tools and software for clinical work with elderly people suffering from dementia and people with autism spectrum disorders, deafness and reading disabilities.

LanPercept will provide new tools for practitioners in educational and health institutions and in this way targets the marginalization of persons with disabilities and aging individuals, which is one of the major challenges in the current-day European society. In order to take innovative steps in the development of new tools in tackling this problem, a close collaboration of professionals from different fields is crucial. This was also identified by the coordinator of the network, Professor Mila Vulchanova from The Norwegian University of Science and Technology:

"The current network is unique in bridging together basic research and clinical research (which is still rare), with a strong focus on methodology and advanced techniques for studying language and perception. This is a must for the European researcher for the future."

In addition to helping people with vision-language mapping problems, the clinical aspects of the network are important in advancing basic research in the field, as Vulchanova notes:

"Typically, we can see why and how basic research can contribute to improve and address clinical research and concerns. However, basic research can also benefit from studies conducted in clinical settings or with clinical populations, and clinical studies bring in a completely new perspective. The evidence we get from clinical populations is extremely valuable and helps research zoom into specific problems or areas which may be specifically highlighted in the case of developmental or acquired deficits. This evidence complements the picture we have from typical populations."

In this unique collaboration, the network researchers are developing theories that can capture the features of the visual environment that humans typically attend to. The theories will also explain how visual objects, events and actions are shaping language understanding. In experiments, researchers are also testing how language shapes our attention to the visual environment. Taking into account both of these directions, it is expected that LanPercept will develop theories that can explain the complicated interplay of vision-language mapping in humans.

Young professionals for societal and industrial needs

More and more young researchers who finish their PhD or postdoctoral training at universities are seeking ways to build a professional career outside of academia. LanPercept is targeted to train interdisciplinary professionals who are no longer confined to the traditional boundaries between academia and the private sector.

Vulchanova continues: "In Europe today there is a clear trend for interdisciplinary research and enterprise, with novel and unforseen cross-fertilizations across traditional fields. Clearly, postgraduate education should follow lead and prepare graduates for the needs of changing technological markets, and society at large."

In LanPercept, the strong clinical aspect and collaboration with leading industrial partners guarantee a smooth career path from academia to industry and the public sector. Young researchers in the Network will do internships with the participating market-leading eye-tracking and brain research companies that offer technical tools for vision-language research. Industrial partners will also offer direct training to teach to identify direct applications of research outputs, as well as train entrepreneurial skills. Collaborators in the world-leading eye-tracking companies have also named direct benefits of participating in EU's LanPercept network:

Tommy Strandvall, Global Head of Knowledge and Training at Tobii Technology (Sweden): "This is a great opportunity for us as a full partner of LanPercept to collaborate closely with eight outstanding European universities. By engaging an experienced researcher for 24 months we aspire to make new knowledge and eye tracking solutions available to the research community."

Martin Ptter, Product Manager at SensoMotoric Instruments GmbH (Germany): "We at SMI are looking forward to the collaboration with senior specialists as well as future professionals in the area of language and perception to better understand the needs and develop the next generation of research tools for this community."

These unique collaborations are expected to lead to strong ties and improved synergy between researchers in academia and the private sector, as well as for long-lasting partnerships beyond the network to further benefit language and perception research.
