The Cronk of Higher Education - Accreditation Commission ...

A spokesman for the Highbrow Learn-ed Commission revealed in a report published by the Chronicle of Post Secondary Ed last week that Food, especially non-curricular or nutrient-specific culinary preparations, would become a Distinctive Criterion subject to increased scrutiny on all community college accreditation applications. Effective Boxing Day, December 2012, colleges seeking Highbrow accreditation must henceforth demonstrate how Food fits into their strategic visions, core values, mission statements, assessment plans, curricula and feedback loops.

Dr. Tusk Manger, a reviewer and taste-tester for the Highbrow Learn-ed Commission and Professor of Psychology at Nebraska State University-Aurora, revealed the results of a longitudinal super-sized study conducted by Dr. Jeffrey Roz, Hamilton State University, and Dr. Jann M Kontento, Copperfield Community College. The report detailed and robustly analyzed food preparation, recipe discussions, and email baked goods notifications at 36 benchmarking institutions.

?Just think Potluck!? said Dr. Manger. ?The Roz & Kontento study found community college staff spend about 65 percent of their salaried work day preparing for potlucks, grazing, sharing recipes, emailing notifications about dessert needs at division meetings, chatting over hummus or quiche in the faculty lounge, planning bake sale fund raisers for partnering organizations and orchestrating classroom ?cultural? studies which mandate at-risk eating activities. Of course the Roz & Kontento study has nothing to do with culinary arts, snack bars, dietetic education, nutrition programs, institutional cafeterias or even common brown bag lecture series events. Those boys have discovered that hard-core paper plate beanie-weenie concoctions and crockpot food?especially at division meeting potlucks?may represent a significantly overlooked part of every community college?s curricula. Eating is the best practice at all community colleges. Ask any secretary about his obsession with Chocolate! Strangely enough, Chef Johil, a grad student working with Roz & Kontento, discovered (using Cue-Foodist text-analysis software) that the word Potluck appears in 41 percent of all email subject headings at one community college in western Phoenix.?

Manger went on to explain that Roz & Kontento also discovered that 37 percent of all the benchmarking college emails contain some reference to pies, cheesecake, left-over mushroom pizza, bagels, garbanzo beans, COM 209 ethnic awareness potlucks, donuts in the dean?s office or ?almost-gone? sliced summer sausage and cheese snacks remaining from a governing board meeting.

?It is time the Highbrow Learn-ed Commission better understands how Food influences the teaching/learning process at our postsecondary institutions,? said Manger. ?Several Highbrow Learn-ed Commission leaders from the State University of South Central Ohio Residence Life staff will develop our new Food Best Practices Consensus Systems Analysis and Appraisal for accreditation applications. And we will be funding the development for our new accreditation guidelines with monies obtained from a Federal Department of Fast Food Restaurants Title 5000 Calories Grant awarded by Dr. Jill Biden and First Lady Michelle Obama.?

A look at Syrian president's statements on crisis

President Bashar Assad has rarely deviated from his statements on the crisis in Syria since it began nearly 20 months ago. Here is a look at his latest remarks, in an interview shown Friday by broadcaster Russia Today:

? "We do not have a civil war."

Assad has insisted the revolt against his rule is the work of what he calls foreign terrorists ? hostile countries and extremists who want to destroy Syria.

The uprising began with months of protests by ordinary citizens that turned violent after repeated attacks by security forces. On July 15, the International committee of the Red Cross said it considers the conflict to be a full-blown civil war. That term allows parties involved to use appropriate force to achieve their aims under international humanitarian law.

? "I can tell (you) that in weeks we can finish everything."

Assad has said his military would be able to restore calm quickly ? but only if foreign countries immediately stop sending weapons and aid to the rebels.

Foreign countries, including nations in the West, Europe and the Gulf, do support the opposition, although most have said they won't arm the rebels out of fear the weapons could fall into the wrong hands. Weapons are being smuggled in, however, although the rebels say they are only getting light arms that cannot turn the tide against the regime's far superior firepower.

? "I think that the cost of foreign invasion of Syria, if it happened, would be greater than the whole world can afford."

Assad has warned against foreign military intervention before, saying any attempt to meddle in the crisis would cause the entire region to burn.

The conflict does have the potential to suck in neighboring countries because Syria has a web of allegiances to powerful forces, including Iran and the Shiite militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon. But world powers have shown no appetite for military intervention, and even Assad acknowledges it's an unlikely scenario.

? "We are the last bastion of secularism, stability and coexistence in the region."

Syria is too wracked by conflict to be seen as a bastion of stability and coexistence, but it's true that the country has pushed a secular identity in the past. In many ways, it was a strategy to hold together the country's fragile jigsaw puzzle of Sunnis, Shiites, Alawites, Christians, Kurds, Druse, Circassians, Armenians and others.

Sectarian violence is widely feared, and in a worst-case scenario, the country could descend into warfare among religious sects. The Assad regime is dominated by the Alawite minority, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, but the country is overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim. The uprising already has brought sectarian tensions to the surface.

Relationships: Internet Dating | Illustrado Life

?Dear Dr. Holmes and Mr. Baer:

I joined an online dating site a month ago.? Since then I have met 17 women, all of whom described themselves as younger than they really were and weighing less than they really did.? Is it just my bad luck or are all women really liars?

?~Jimmy

Dear Jimmy:

Thank you for your letter, despite its false dichotomy.? A false dichotomy, also known as either-or fallacy or as black and white thinking, is when a situation is presented as having only two alternatives, when that is not so.? Other options include a position that is between the two extremes; in other words, when there are shades of grey though, alas, not quite the same 50 shades that EL James describes in her trilogy (long live suburban porn!).

Another is one where the result may be entirely different; in other words, not black, white, or even grey in any of its different hues, but a subtle pink or a fiery red.

Alas, when describing themselves as younger than their real ages, these women may all seem to be lying.? After all, under normal circumstances, they should all know their date of birth.? However, what if one, two or all of these 17 women are poor at math?? Such that 2012 less 1976 equals 26 instead of 36, or even 30?

Describing oneself as weighing less is even less likely to be a lie since not all scales are as truthful as Snow White?s stepmother?s mirror. Not only might these women have inaccurate scales, very likely some of them may have less than 20-20 vision, so much so that 160 pounds reads 140.? Indeed, it may even read 116, in which case not only might there be poor eyesight involved, but also wishful thinking.

As for you being unlucky, well, it seems that against all the odds you have actually met 17 out of 17 women who are all poor at math, and/or have bad eyesight, and/or a feeble grip on reality, and to cap it all, are probably all both old and fat. That, in my estimation, really is bad luck.

All the best?JAF Baer

Dear Jimmy:

If I were rabidly feminist, which I am not, I would accuse both you and Mr. Baer of both gross myopia and being in cahoots.? The latter because I can almost feel you and my husband chest bumping each other, agreeing with each other that women are occasionally economical with the truth. The chest bumping, of course, is merely figurative. Mr. Baer will be the first to admit that this is, in all probability, his least likely choice when expressing approval.

Myopic in the sense that, while I love Mr. Baer?s ripostes, I feel it unfair that, while he has answered your questions more than adequately (and in quite a funny way ?always a plus in column-writing), not once did he raise? the possibility that, perhaps, you, Jimmy, may be one of those pots calling the kettle black just a wee bit too quickly.

After all, the few studies that have been done on Internet dating have all concluded that both women and men lie when describing themselves on these sites.? Perhaps even more damning is author and VillageVoice columnist Michael Musto?s observation that men lie more than women do.

Perhaps I am old-fashioned, but I cannot help feeling that someone who may have been a bit ?economical with the truth? has no business being judgmental about women who may have been just as economical.

Admittedly, there has been very little research on Internet dating.? Most of them have been commissioned by the dating sites which would imply that there might be some vested interest in the results.? That is, ultimately, the conclusion that dating sites work.

However, despite this (understandable and predictable) result, the researches they fund suggest that people tell only white lies, as opposed to outrageous ones, when describing themselves. For example, describing oneself as a tall white Caucasian when one is actually a short brown Pinoy (or vice versa) would not go down very well; whereas sending a picture taken 3 years earlier might be forgiven.

OKCupid?dubbed the ?Google of online dating??is the leading free online dating site in the US, with over 4.5 million monthly unique visitors. Its blog, OKTrends, which compiles observations from real people?s interactions on the site, reveal the following:

American women lie most about their weight and their age; and judging from your experience, the same holds true for Filipinas.? In addition, many Americans also lie about their breast size and the number of celebrities they know.

Men, on the other hand, lie most about the following two things:? their height (adding an average 2 inches to what it really is) and their jobs.? Generally, men are 20% poorer than they say they are.

Studies not supported by dating sites are more objective and considered far more credible.? These include those conducted by the following:

????????? 1. Gerald A. Mendelsohn, a professor of Psychology at the University of California. His Berkeley research involved more than one million online dating profiles was partly financed by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Because the major dating sites had more than 593 million visits in the United States in a typical month, (according to the Internet tracking firm Experian Hitwise) Dr. Mendelsohn concluded: ?As more and more of life happens online, it?s less and less the case that online is a vacuum,? he added. ?It is life.?

????????? 2. Michael J. Rosenfeld, an associate professor of sociology at Stanford. (Scholars said that most studies using online dating data are about heterosexuals, because they make up more of the population.) Of the romantic partnerships formed in the United States between 2007 and 2009, 21 percent of heterosexual couples met online.

????????? 3. Catalina Toma, an assistant professor in the department of communication arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Toma wanted to learn more about how people present themselves and how they judge misrepresentation. She shared the following results: about 81 percent of people misrepresent their height, weight or age in their profiles. On the bright side: people tend to tell small lies because, after all, they may eventually meet in person.

On average, the women described themselves as 8.5 pounds thinner in their profiles than they really were. Men fibbed by 2 pounds, though they lied by a greater magnitude than women about their height, rounding up a half inch (apparently every bit counts).

In conclusion, Jimmy, if you?ve found Internet dating fun, and most especially if you intend to continue meeting women online, I suggest you reframe your approach to the inevitable disparity between what they say they look like and how they actually look.

As long as you automatically add 2-5 years to the age a woman says she is and another 10-25 pounds to the weight she claims she is, you will perhaps be a wee bit more laid back about the white lies people tell each other.? Hopefully, the law of karma applies so that the women will be less harsh in judging you too, when you arrive with slightly less hair and slightly shorter than in your profile, and are only able to treat them to a hamburger instead of the Wagyu steak you hinted you were capable of paying for.

If you can see beyond the numbers, perhaps given enough time, there may be someone out there for you?not necessarily to marry, but certainly to be a good friend to.

Good luck and all the best?MG Holmes

Biden: Dems ready to compromise on 'fiscal cliff'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden said Wednesday that he and President Barack Obama are anxious to move forward on a bipartisan solution to the looming "fiscal cliff" that could force tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts next year.

The real question is what Republicans in Congress will do, Biden said. Democrats will keep control of the White House and the Senate, while Republicans will stay in charge of the House.

"What is the takeaway going to be on the part of our Republican colleagues? What judgment are they going to make?" Biden told reporters on Air Force Two, as he flew from Chicago, where he watched election returns Tuesday night, to his home in Delaware.

"I know it takes a little time to kind of digest what's going on. But I think people know we've got to get down to work and I think they're ready to move," Biden said.

Biden said he believes there are at least six Republican senators who are prepared to compromise on fiscal issues, adding that Democrats "are going to have to compromise too. It's not like we're going to go in and say: 'This is our deal. Take it or leave it.' "

Biden also said he is optimistic about a bipartisan deal on immigration reform. Obama won an overwhelming percentage of the Hispanic vote Tuesday, and many Republicans say the party must improve its standing with Latino voters to remain relevant as the Latino population continues to increase.

Latinos "played a major role" in Obama's victory, Biden said. "And that's got to be a wakeup call for a lot of my Republican colleagues."

Obama, who won a decisive victory Tuesday in the Electoral College, has said his failure to enact comprehensive immigration reform was one of the biggest regrets of his first term. But Biden said the president's re-election offers a new chance.

"I think it's a different day," Biden said. "How it's going to turn out, I don't know. But the president and I are getting to work."

On taxes and spending, Biden said the election offered "a clear sort of mandate," with voters "coming much closer to our view about how to deal with tax policy" than the Republican view. Obama has said he wants to retain Bush-era tax cuts for all but the wealthiest two percent of earners. Republicans have balked at the plan, insisting on across-the board cuts.

Biden's comments came as House Speaker John Boehner offered Wednesday to pursue a deal with Obama that would include increased revenues to help reduce the nation's staggering debt and put its finances in order. House Republicans want Obama to make good on a "balanced approach" that would including spending cuts and address government social benefit programs, Boehner said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid also said he wants a quick solution to the so-called fiscal cliff, a one-two punch of expiring tax cuts and across-the-board spending cuts to the Pentagon and domestic programs that could total $800 billion next year.

With the election over, Biden said he is optimistic a deal can be reached. "I think we can do something on corporate taxes sooner than later. That would be positive, be a little confidence-building," he said.

While the president and Congress have been gridlocked for nearly two years, Biden said he thinks the election results mean that "the fever will break" in Washington. "And you know, Barack's re-elected, so this sort of (GOP) cause to keep a second term from happening" is over, Biden said. Obama "is there for four years."

Biden said he hopes the election prompts "some real soul-searching" within the Republican Party, with the result that they are more willing to cooperate with Democrats than during the past two years.

NYSE Euronext bets on cuts to offset trading slump

LONDON (Reuters) - NYSE Euronext , the world's largest stock exchange, is cutting costs in response to a trading slump that is hurting the world's top exchanges and brokers.

NYSE said on Tuesday it was ahead of schedule in a $250 million cost-cutting plan launched earlier this year, although savings had yet to show through on the bottom line as revenue fell faster than costs. Third-quarter net income dropped 42 percent.

The exchange's results reflected weaker trading in its main equities and futures markets in New York, London and Paris because of investors' concerns about the global economy.

Stock markets and the brokers who trade on them for their investment bank and asset management clients rely on high trading activity to support revenue because they charge commission on the value of individual transactions.

Many analysts expect NYSE rival the London Stock Exchange and interdealer broker ICAP to report lower profit next week after slow trading for most of the third quarter.

NYSE chief executive Duncan Niederauer said on Tuesday that his cost-cut plan, dubbed Project 14, was a longer-term strategy to boost profit. The company hopes revenue will stabilize over time while it continues to cut jobs and make savings on technology.

"Project 14 ... will drive a step-up in the underlying earnings power of the company in the coming years, even if trading volumes remain lackluster," Niederauer said.

NYSE said the average daily value of European shares traded was down 31 percent in the third quarter compared with last year, while equity trading activity in the United States was down 39 percent.

The company cut $82 million of costs - a third of the 2014 goal - beating its target for this year of $63 million.

"Project 14 seems to be moving ahead of schedule which is encouraging given the weak trading levels seen this year," Berenberg Bank analyst Richard Perrott said.

NYSE Euronext shares in Paris were trading down 3.9 percent to 18.93 euros at 1553 GMT.

Deutsche Boerse , the exchange with which NYSE tried and failed to merge earlier this year, was last week forced to cut its 2012 revenue target as lower market volatility caused a dip in third-quarter trading.

LOW TRADING LEVELS

Analysts expect the LSE to post a 7 percent drop in first-half net income to 120 million pounds ($192 million) on November 16, according to Thomson Reuters Starmine data.

ICAP is expected to report first-half net income down 8 percent to 117.5 pounds on November 14.

"Low overall trading levels are a challenge for the LSE and ICAP, though at least in this period the LSE should be cushioned thanks to earnings from non-volume related businesses like information subscriptions and treasury income from its clearing house," said Perrott.

Some of the world's top investment banks have also reported lower third-quarter equity revenues, including UBS and JP Morgan .
