Netanyahu warns it's 'very late' to stop a nuclear Iran

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Thursday that Iran will have enough enriched uranium to make a nuclear bomb by next summer and urged the world to draw a clear "red line" to stop it in its tracks.

Saying it was getting "late, very late" to stop Iran, Netanyahu flashed a diagram showing the progress Iran has made toward creating a bomb. He said Iran had already completed the first stage of uranium enrichment, and then he drew his own red line on the diagram to highlight the point of no return ? the completion of the second stage and 90 percent enrichment.

"Iran is 70 percent of the way there and ... well into the second stage. By next summer, at current enrichment rates, they will have finished the medium enrichment and move on to the final stage," Netanyahu said. "From there it is only a few more weeks before they have enriched enough for a bomb."

Netanyahu has repeatedly argued that time is running out to stop the Islamic Republic from becoming a nuclear power and the threat of force must be seriously considered.

"I believe that faced with a clear red line, Iran will back down ? and it will give more time for sanctions and diplomacy," the Israeli prime minister said. "Red lines don't lead to war, red lines prevent war ... nothing could imperil the world more than a nuclear-armed Iran."

Netanyahu's speech marks perhaps his final plea before Israel takes matters into its own hands. Israeli leaders have issued a series of warnings in recent weeks suggesting that if Iran's uranium enrichment program continues it may soon stage a unilateral military strike, flouting even American wishes.

The Obama administration has urgently sought to hold off Israeli military action, which would likely result in the U.S. being pulled into a conflict and cause region-wide mayhem on the eve of American elections.

Israel considers a nuclear-armed Iran to be an existential threat, citing Iranian denials of the Holocaust, its calls for Israel's destruction, its development of missiles capable of striking the Jewish state and its support for hostile Arab militant groups.

"Given this record of Iranian aggression without nuclear weapons, just imagine Iranian aggression with nuclear weapons," Netanyahu said.

Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes but Israel, the U.S. and other Western allies reject the claim. Four rounds of U.N. sanctions have already been placed on Iran.

A U.N. report last month only reinforced Israeli fears, finding that Iran has moved more of its uranium enrichment activities into fortified bunkers deep underground where there are impervious to air attack. Enrichment is a key activity in building a bomb, though it has other uses as well, such as producing medical isotopes.

While Israel is convinced that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon, American officials believe Iran has not yet made a final decision to take the plunge, even as it develops much of the infrastructure needed to do so.

Obama has repeatedly said he will not allow Iran to gain nuclear weapons and has said the U.S. would be prepared to use force as a last resort.Israel's timeline for military action is shorter than that of the United States, which has far more powerful bunker-busting bombs at its disposal, and there is great suspicion in Israel over whether in the moment of truth Obama will follow through on his pledge.

Speaking shortly before Netanyahu, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel of ethnic cleansing for building settlements in east Jerusalem.

"It is a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people via the demolition of their homes," Abbas said in his speech to the U.N. General Assembly.

Netanyahu rebuked Abbas in his own address, saying: "We won't solve our conflict with libelous speeches at the U.N."

Israel conquered the eastern part of Jerusalem from Jordan during the 1967 Mideast War. It later annexed it but the move has not been internationally recognized. The Palestinians want east Jerusalem to the capital of their future state in the West Bank.

Abbas also said he has opened talks on a new bid for international recognition at the U.N., but didn't specify exactly when he will ask the General Assembly to vote.

"Intensive consultations with the various regional organizations and the state members" were underway, he said.

The Palestinians will apply to the General Assembly for nonmember state status.

That stands in sharp contrast to last year, when they asked the Security Council to admit them as a full member state, but the bid failed.

Abbas insisted that the new quest for recognition was "not seeking to delegitimize Israel, but rather establish a state that should be established: Palestine."

Palestinian officials said their bid is likely to be submitted on Nov. 29.

Ford Gyron model to cross the auction block | Hemmings Blog ...

While scale models from Detroit?s automakers offer significant historic glimpses into the automobile development process and seldom come up for public auction, they rarely warrant headlines by themselves. Exceptions can be made, however, particularly for models that represent the last physical evidence of a lost concept car and that come from the fertile mind of one of Detroit?s leading designers ? as is the case with this model of the Ford Gyron concept car that will head to auction later this year.

In 1956, Alex Tremulis, then head of Ford?s Advanced Studio, conceived of the two-wheeled, gyroscopically stabilized, delta-shaped Gyron as ?a genuine breakthrough that would influence all future car design,? according to Jim and Cheryl Farrell, writing in their book Ford Design Department Concepts and Showcars, 1932-1961. ?He told anyone who would listen that he thought his idea represented the ultimate in aerodynamic design (an overarching philosophy of Tremulis?s throughout his career). Ford Motor Co., on the other hand, thought of the Gyron as a two-passenger showcar only, and never as a predictor of what was to come on production Fords.?

Nevertheless, work began in earnest on the Gyron in 1959, with designers McKinley Thompson, Syd Mead, Bill Dayton, and John Najjar contributing to the final shape of the concept car. Tremulis intended for the Gyron to be fully functional, but after getting a $60,000 quote for a two-foot-diameter gyroscope and figuring it would cost another $75,000 to complete the Gyron as a functioning car (totaling more than $1 million in today?s money), he and Najjar decided to use two outrigger wheels to keep the concept car upright. Electric motors powered the full-size fiberglass concept car to a maximum speed of 5 MPH, and Dayton?s interior featured a center-mounted dial that controlled both speed and direction, theoretically allowing either of the two passengers to drive the car. Ford debuted the Gyron at the New York International Auto Show on April 1, 1961, then the following month moved it to the Ford Rotunda in Dearborn, where it remained until the November 1962 fire that destroyed it and the Rotunda.

According to Wright Auctions, which will handle the sale of the Gyron model, the model made it into the hands of Joe Oros, at the time the head of the Ford design studio. Oros then held on to it until March 2012, when he sold it to the current owner. The model ? which measures 21-1/2 inches long, 11-3/4 inches wide, and 7-1/4 inches tall ? will be among the lots in Wright?s Important Design Auction, scheduled for December 13 at Wright?s Chicago location. Measuring the universe?s 'exit door': For the first time, an international team has measured the radius of a black hole

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? The point of no return: In astronomy, it's known as a black hole -- a region in space where the pull of gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. Black holes that can be billions of times more massive than our sun may reside at the heart of most galaxies. Such supermassive black holes are so powerful that activity at their boundaries can ripple throughout their host galaxies.

Now, an international team, led by researchers at MIT's Haystack Observatory, has for the first time measured the radius of a black hole at the center of a distant galaxy -- the closest distance at which matter can approach before being irretrievably pulled into the black hole.

The scientists linked together radio dishes in Hawaii, Arizona and California to create a telescope array called the "Event Horizon Telescope" (EHT) that can see details 2,000 times finer than what's visible to the Hubble Space Telescope. These radio dishes were trained on M87, a galaxy some 50 million light years from the Milky Way. M87 harbors a black hole 6 billion times more massive than our sun; using this array, the team observed the glow of matter near the edge of this black hole -- a region known as the "event horizon."

"Once objects fall through the event horizon, they're lost forever," says Shep Doeleman, assistant director at the MIT Haystack Observatory and research associate at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. "It's an exit door from our universe. You walk through that door, you're not coming back."

Doeleman and his colleagues have published the results of their study this week in the journal Science.

Jets at the edge of a black hole

Supermassive black holes are the most extreme objects predicted by Albert Einstein's theory of gravity -- where, according to Doeleman, "gravity completely goes haywire and crushes an enormous mass into an incredibly close space." At the edge of a black hole, the gravitational force is so strong that it pulls in everything from its surroundings. However, not everything can cross the event horizon to squeeze into a black hole. The result is a "cosmic traffic jam" in which gas and dust build up, creating a flat pancake of matter known as an accretion disk. This disk of matter orbits the black hole at nearly the speed of light, feeding the black hole a steady diet of superheated material. Over time, this disk can cause the black hole to spin in the same direction as the orbiting material.

Caught up in this spiraling flow are magnetic fields, which accelerate hot material along powerful beams above the accretion disk The resulting high-speed jet, launched by the black hole and the disk, shoots out across the galaxy, extending for hundreds of thousands of light-years. These jets can influence many galactic processes, including how fast stars form. 'Is Einstein right?'

A jet's trajectory may help scientists understand the dynamics of black holes in the region where their gravity is the dominant force. Doeleman says such an extreme environment is perfect for confirming Einstein's theory of general relativity -- today's definitive description of gravitation.

"Einstein's theories have been verified in low-gravitational field cases, like on Earth or in the solar system," Doeleman says. "But they have not been verified precisely in the only place in the universe where Einstein's theories might break down -- which is right at the edge of a black hole."

According to Einstein's theory, a black hole's mass and its spin determine how closely material can orbit before becoming unstable and falling in toward the event horizon. Because M87's jet is magnetically launched from this smallest orbit, astronomers can estimate the black hole's spin through careful measurement of the jet's size as it leaves the black hole. Until now, no telescope has had the magnifying power required for this kind of observation.

"We are now in a position to ask the question, 'Is Einstein right?'" Doeleman says. "We can identify features and signatures predicted by his theories, in this very strong gravitational field."

The team used a technique called Very Long Baseline Interferometry, or VLBI, which links data from radio dishes located thousands of miles apart. Signals from the various dishes, taken together, create a "virtual telescope" with the resolving power of a single telescope as big as the space between the disparate dishes. The technique enables scientists to view extremely precise details in faraway galaxies.

Using the technique, Doeleman and his team measured the innermost orbit of the accretion disk to be only 5.5 times the size of the black hole event horizon. According to the laws of physics, this size suggests that the accretion disk is spinning in the same direction as the black hole -- the first direct observation to confirm theories of how black holes power jets from the centers of galaxies.

The team plans to expand its telescope array, adding radio dishes in Chile, Europe, Mexico, Greenland and Antarctica, in order to obtain even more detailed pictures of black holes in the future.

Christopher Reynolds, a professor of astronomy at the University of Maryland, says the group's results provide the first observational data that will help scientists understand how a black hole's jets behave.

"The basic nature of jets is still mysterious," Reynolds says. "Many astrophysicists suspect that jets are powered by black hole spin ... but right now, these ideas are still entirely in the realm of theory. This measurement is the first step in putting these ideas on a firm observational basis."

This research was supported by the National Science Foundation.

Walking And Light Exercise Does Nothing For Weight Loss ...

WeightTraining.com Financial Samurai ChallengeI consider myself a health conscience guy who plays tennis three times a week, watches what he eats, and goes on frequent hikes and bike rides. That said, I?ve definitely been overweight before, and I came close again on my recent trip to Europe.

The reasons to stay relatively fit are as follows:

* I don?t want to die before my time. Although we don?t know when we will die, we can at least try and reduce our chances of an early death by eating right and exercising regularly.

* I don?t want to burden my family with unnecessary health complications. Being a burden to loved ones is a terrible, terrible thing. I would hate to see my wife, kids, or relatives have to constantly check in on me because I?ve received brain damage from a stroke, or can no longer go to the bathroom on my own due to some manly cancer.

* I don?t want to financially burden my fellow Americans who will have to subsidize my medical costs thanks to universal health care. As honorable citizens, we should try to give back more to our country more than we receive. This is the best way to ensure the health of our nation?s future.

* I don?t want to let my US Tennis Association teammates down when it?s time to battle other teams. We all train very hard in the off season so that come game time, we?re ready to compete. Being physically fit is standard, but can also be a huge edge as we battle less in shape competitors. Once we are fit, we can then concentrate on our skills and mental fitness which are crucial to winning matches.

* I?m frugal and don?t want to spend too much on new clothes. During the first year of college and the first year of work I had to buy new shirts and pants because I gained about 15 pounds. I?m not big into clothing in the first place, but when you?ve got to buy three new suits of different color, things add up! Dress shirts and jeans are easily $50-$200 each and higher. Imagine being able to fit in your jeans from 10-15 years ago, how much money you can save!

* I don?t want to ignore the plight of others. I grew up in several third world countries and I?ve witnessed immense poverty. When I know there are millions of people starving around the world, there?s no way I can overeat and not remember. America is a country of abundance and it?s easy to consume more than normal. We just have to remind ourselves how lucky we are, as we?re not even being asked to help others, only ourselves.

* I want to feel good. When I was heavier, I didn?t have as much energy and I didn?t feel as good about myself. I?d look at new pictures and come away shocked because they were so different from how I used to look. When you feel good, you look good. And when you look good, you have more confidence to succeed.

Despite all these reasons, I still find it very tough to stay in ideal weight of 152-163 pounds for someone 5 feet 10 inches tall. 152 pounds sounds ridiculously light, but hey, that?s what the doctors and researchers say is ideal weight for a medium bodied person my height, so who am I to make excuses?

The problem is, when I see a batch of lemon meringue mini pastries, I cannot help but eat six of them at a time! When there is all you can eat BBQ ribs, the same thing happens. Tell me I?m not the only one!

PROOF THAT LIGHT EXERCISE DOES NOT KEEP YOU FIT

My friends and I walked on average four hours a day for 10 out of the 17 days we were in Europe. Our ship would dock by 8am, and we?d go from around 8:30am all the way to 5pm exploring every single city. That?s 8.5 hours off the boat at each port, with half the time walking.

Given it takes 16-20 minutes on average to walk a mile, we walked 12-15 miles a day for 10 days. We walked another three miles a day for the other seven days the rest of the time. ?If we add up everything, we averaged about 8-9 miles of walking a day for 17 days!

During long lines at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, or during down time at the gardens of Catherine?s Palace in St. Petersburg, we?d try and get at least 30 pushups and 50 sit-ups in as well. The reason being we knew that a dinner buffet or scrumptious meal high in butter and joy awaited us once we returned to the ship!

Furthermore, we?d all hit the swimming pool and gym at least twice a week to try and get at least a 30 minute sweat in.

THE TYPICAL MEAL ITINERARY ON BOARD

* Breakfast: Omellette, bacon, sausage, a couple mini pastries, Norweigan fish, and OJ.

* Lunch: Local meal on land if at port, or another buffet meal on board while at sea. We?d generally eat a salad, piece of flank steak, shrimp cocktail and some juice.

* Dinner: Rib-eye, filet mignon, prime rib, rack of lamb, beef wellington, lobster, sushi, sashimi, chef salads, creme brulee, hot fudge sundae, apple cobbler, cheese platters and much, much more.

* Evening snack and beverages: The restaurants would open up at 10pm again until midnight where you could eat the same food that they served during lunch. Every other night there would be some type of dessert extravaganza, and of course, if you are like me, you enjoy the cocktail at a ship bar or while you?re playing poker until 2am!

Despite the availability of food, I did my best to eat until slightly full and not pig out until I felt sick. I went for quality food items instead of quantity. But, when you are eating such treats every single day, it is hard not to put on some weight.

Mini Lemon Meringue Pies!

I ate 10 of them in two days

WEIGHT GAIN GALORE

Now that you know my daily exercise routine and meal itinerary, guess how much weight I gained in just seventeen days? Remember, I walked 8-9 miles on average, put in the occasional work out, and tried to eat in moderation.

I went from 160 pounds to 170 pounds in two and a half weeks! To compare apples to apples, 10 pounds is a whopping 6% increase in body weight in such a short time.

I knew I was gaining weight because my jeans felt tighter each day that passed by, but I didn?t realize how much I gained until I got back to San Francisco. I was shocked after spending the first 3-4 months of the year trying to lose 8-10 pounds, I had gained it all back in just a matter of weeks.

THE WORKOUT ACTION PLAN

The ideal body weight of 152-163 for someone 5? 10? pisses me off. As I mentioned in the beginning of the post, I have many reasons why I want to stay in shape, and I?m assuming that many of you guys have similar reasoning.

As a result, I?ve decided to join WeightTraining.com owned by Yakezie Member Joel to exercise more, track my progress, and have some fun competing with other people online who want to get in shape and stay in shape! WeightTraining.com offers free workout logging, an exercise database with 2,000+ exercises?and?various fitness challenges.

My exercise routine will be as follows:

* Three sets of 20 push-ups for a total of 60 a day

* Three sets of 50 sit-ups for a total of 150 a day

* Five hours of tennis a week

* One hour of biking a week

* One hour of hiking a week

The goal is to burn about 500 calories a day beyond normal activity.

As for food, I plan to go back to my normal eating habits of fruit and barley green in the morning, a regular lunch under 700 calories, and dinner under 1,000 calories for a total of 2,200 calories or less. If I can consume a net 1,700 calories a day, I?m pretty sure that within a couple months I?ll be able to get back down to 160 lbs and hopefully down to 155 lbs, the weight I was back in high school.

You can find me on WeightTraining.com with the account FinSamurai. WeightTraining.com motivates users to workout by rewarding points for logged workouts. This workout summary will give you a better idea on how exercises are accounted for within a workout. We plan to do a weekly challenge based on how much we exercise and tally up our points. It?s a fun way to keep accountable and lose weight and stay in shape together.

Join the fitness battle here! Battle starts October 1st at midnight! I want to kick your ass and my own!

Regards,

Sam

Vogue publisher to open cafe outpost in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Vogue's fashion-loving fans will soon have a chance to drink in the magazine's aura at a new cafe in Dubai.

The glossy's global publisher, Conde Nast International, said Tuesday that it expects to open the Vogue Cafe in the glitzy Gulf emirate's largest shopping mall by the end of the year.

It will be the company's first such cafe in the Middle East, where luxury fashion labels such as Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Chanel are extremely popular among the region's well-heeled shoppers.

"The expatriate community and the local Emirati community are very conscious of brands," said Stuart Nielsen, director of Conde Nast's restaurant division. "People always love to eat and drink, and we see an opportunity because they love fashion."

The cafe will be surrounded by high-end fashion and shoe stores in Dubai Mall. The sprawling shopping center is located at the foot of the world's tallest skyscraper, the 2,717 foot-tall (828 meter) Burj Khalifa, which is already home to a swanky hotel and several restaurants designed by Giorgio Armani.

Contemporary European food will be on the Vogue Cafe menu, but no alcohol will be served, Nielsen said.

Drinks, however, will be available at another Conde Nast outlet designed to cater to male fans of its magazines. The publisher expects to open a bar based around GQ magazine in one of Dubai's high-end hotels next year.

English-language versions of both magazines are available in the Middle East, though Conde Nast does not publish local versions of either.

The publisher is partnering with a Dubai-based firm called Inspired Group on the cafe and bar. Nielsen declined to discuss the financial terms of the partnership.

Conde Nast opened a similar cafe in Moscow in 2004. It has since opened two other establishments tied to its brands in the Russian capital.

The company is planning to open another GQ Bar in Istanbul this year, and has signed deals for Conde Nast establishments in Bangkok and Singapore, Nielsen said. It is also considering opening cafes in Mideast cities closer to Dubai, including Kuwait City and the Emirati capital, Abu Dhabi.

Besides Vogue and GQ, Conde Nast's titles include The New Yorker, Wired and Vanity Fair.

Conde Nast International, which publishes international versions of the American magazines, set up its restaurant division in 2010. It publishes more than 120 magazines in 24 international markets.

TO BUY OR TO RENT? | Cheyenne Homes & Real Estate Blog

To Buy Or To Rent?? COLDWELL BANKER The Property Exchange OFFERS FOUR QUESTIONS to Consider When Deciding whether to BUY or RENT A HOME

Cheyenne, Wyoming ? ?To buy or to rent?? Recent graduates, young couples, relocating professionals and others Ranch Style Homehave all asked themselves this question at one point or another. While each option has its benefits, the decision to purchase an apartment, condominium or home as opposed to renting, is complex and based on a number of factors. The question that remains is whether or not now is the right time to purchase a home for you.

For most people, deciding to purchase a home is the largest financial decision of their lifetime. Before making the jump into homeownership, potential home buyers should consider the ?soft? lifestyle issues as well as the ?hard? financial ones. The professionals at Coldwell Banker The Property Exchange have provided the following four financial and lifestyle questions to consider when determining if buying a home is the right decision for you:

  1. Do you have a steady income? At or near the top of every potential homebuyer?s mind is whether or not they can afford to buy a home right now. Buying a home remains a sound financial decision for those with documented income and a good credit history, and a steady income can provide a strong backbone for the initial down payment and future mortgage payments. The ?Affordability Radar? tool on coldwellbanker.com is a great way to begin this planning and assess ?how much home you can afford.? Don?t hesitate to speak with a real estate professional even before you?re ready to buy a home. Along with a financial planner, a real estate professional can help you answer and uncover questions about the cost of homeownership.

?

  1. Do you plan to stay in a home for an extended period of time? With proper planning, a home purchase has historically proven to be one of the strongest investments one can make. Along those lines, it?s imperative to understand that investing in a home is much different than investing in a stock portfolio. Homes typically appreciate in value over time while the owner builds his or her equity through monthly mortgage payments. If you anticipate staying in a home for only one or two years, it doesn?t necessarily mean buying is not for you, but you are less likely to see a significant financial return on your investment.

?

  1. Do you plan to sell a house in order to buy a house? A local real estate professional can help you understand current local market conditions and will help you make smart decisions when listing a home on the market. If you do not currently own a home that needs to be sold prior to purchasing a new one, now is a particularly smart time to buy. Even with lenders becoming increasingly more thorough in their approval process, mortgage financing is still widely available for those with a steady income and solid credit. High inventories and low interest rates give first-time homebuyers a tremendous amount of opportunity and flexibility in markets across the U.S.

?

  1. How do your other options compare? For renters, calculating month-to-month housing expenses is as easy as inquiring about the monthly rent and average utilities. The calculation gets a bit more complicated when considering the monthly cost of owning a home. A real estate professional can help you understand a range of financial considerations from annual property taxes to the tax incentives for owning a home.

?There is no one right decision when it comes to renting versus buying a home,? said Kent Jesperson. ?Each individual should take the time to look at their personal and financial situation to decide what will work best for their needs and lifestyle.?

The Weinstein Company Acquires Lee Daniels' "The Butler"

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - The Weinstein Company has acquired domestic distribution rights to "The Butler," Lee Daniels' upcoming film about a black man who served as a butler for eight different presidents, the studio announced on Monday.

Oscar nominee Forest Whitaker stars as the butler, who worked in the White House for more than 30 years under presidents such as Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon.

The tale first surfaced in a Washington Post article, which Danny Strong and Daniels adapted for the screen. Daniels is shooting the film in New Orleans, and the Weinsteins bought the project based off its script and cast.

"Lee tells stories in a way no one else does," TWC co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said in a statement, "What struck me most about this story is the perspective it comes from, which in this case is the butler - a man who was a fly on the wall for decades in the world's most powerful home. It takes an unbelievable cast like the one that's in place to do this story justice, and we are proud to be given the chance to share this story with the world."

The film marks Daniels' next film after "The Paperboy," a campy southern gothic tale which debuted at Cannes and was received with a mix of astonishment and horror.

"The Butler" boasts an all-star cast that boasts not just Whitaker but also Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey, John Cusack, Jane Fonda, Melissa Leo, James Marsden, Vanessa Redgrave, Alan Rickman, Robin Williams and Liev Schreiber.

Pamela Oas Williams, Buddy Patrick, Cassian Elwes and the late Laura Ziskin are producing the project for Ziskin's eponymous company.

"What moves me most about this man is his quiet nature, grace and unmatched perspective that comes from being in one place - a very powerful one - during what was arguably the period in American history that saw the most change," Daniels said in a statement.

The film marks Daniels' first project following "The Paperboy."
