May-Treanor, Walsh win Olympic beach v'ball gold

LONDON (AP) ? Misty May-Treanor danced on the sand and then off it, taking a victory lap around the court before leaving Horse Guards Parade with Kerri Walsh Jennings as three-time Olympic beach volleyball gold medalists.

Walsh Jennings and May-Treanor extended their Olympic winning streak to 21 straight ? unbeaten in Athens, Beijing and now London ? with a 21-16, 21-16 victory over Jennifer Kessy and April Ross on Wednesday night in an all-American championship game.

The match started with nearby Big Ben pealing the hour and ended with the "Star-Spangled Banner" playing in the iconic venue near the Prime Minister's Downing Street office and just down the Mall from the royal residence at Buckingham Palace. Playing on Henry VIII's jousting tiltyard, with the current Prince Harry in the crowd, Walsh Jennings and May-Treanor continued their reign as champions of the beach.

"We set the bar very high," said May-Treanor, who has said she will retire. "We extended ourselves over that bar even higher."

Even Ross and Kessy, who won a silver medal in their Olympic debut, have called their fellow Americans legends.

"They're the best team of all time," Kessy said.

Dominating the sport for three Olympics, Walsh Jennings and May-Treanor have won every match they've ever played at the Summer Games and lost just one of 43 sets.

No one had ever won even two beach volleyball gold medals before the Americans won their second straight in Beijing.

No woman had ever won three Olympic beach volleyball medals of any kind.

"Kudos. Hats off to them," Ross said. "That's just ridiculous."

Walsh Jennings and May-Treanor pulled away in the first set and were never threatened in the second, falling to their knees and hugging as Ross' final serve went long on match point.

May-Treanor, who was knocked out of "Dancing with the Stars" when she tore her Achilles tendon, then began doing a funky jig to rival the scantily clad cheerleaders who help bring the beach party atmosphere to the sold-out crowds in central London.

The winners then took the celebration to the stands, circling the temporary 15,000-seat stadium built on the household cavalry's centuries-old parade grounds and high-fiving just about anyone holding an American flag. They hugged their family and friends in the stands ? although not May-Treanor's husband, Matt, a Los Angeles Dodgers catcher who was watching on a computer from the team's clubhouse.

They hugged on the podium after the gold medals were draped around their neck then shared one with their fellow Californians ? first-time Olympians who helped give the United States its best women's finish since beach volleyball was added to the Olympics in 1996.

"It's insane. It doesn't feel like it's real," Walsh Jennings said. "I told Misty when we were getting our medals, 'If I wake up tomorrow and we have to replay this match, I'm going to be furious.' Because it feels like I'm in a dream. It truly feels surreal and it didn't feel like that the first two times for whatever reason. But this, it's almost too good to be true."

Earlier Wednesday, Brazil's Juliana and Larissa beat Xue Chen and Zhang Xi of China in the bronze medal match.

Brazil's Emanuel and Alison were scheduled to play Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann of Germany in the men's gold medal match on Thursday night. Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins of Latvia were to play Reinder Nummerdor and Rich Schuil of the Netherlands for the men's bronze.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? NBC defended itself Monday against Sharon Osbourne's claim the network discriminated against her afflicted son in casting a new reality show.

The "America's Got Talent" judge told The New York Post that she's quitting the show because NBC fired her son, Jack Osbourne, by email two days before he was to co-star on the reality show "Stars Earn Stripes."

Jack Osbourne, 26, was diagnosed recently with multiple sclerosis.

In a statement Monday, NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt said the network "does not discriminate on any basis."

All potential contestants for "Stars Earn Stripes," which puts celebrities through arduous military-style exercises, had to undergo medical vetting, Greenblatt said. He cited medical privacy in declining to discuss Jack Osbourne specifically.

"Stars Earns Stripes," which debuts Aug. 13, requires "dangerous water stunts, strenuous physical activity, and uses live ammunition," Greenblatt said.

Jack Osbourne was offered two alternative roles on the show but declined both, said Greenblatt, who made an effort to smooth things over with the Osbourne clan, including patriarch-rocker Ozzy Osbourne.

"We have the deepest affection for Sharon Osbourne and consider her to be part of the NBC family," Greenblatt said. "And our hearts go out to her, Ozzy, Jack and his family at this time."

NBC declined further comment. Sharon Osbourne's publicist didn't respond to a request for comment.

A person close to the production said that, contrary to Sharon Osbourne's claim that Jack Osbourne was abruptly fired, NBC hadn't signed him to a contract and had tried to call Sharon Osbourne several weeks beforehand to discuss why her son wouldn't be on the show.

An email was sent after she didn't respond, said the person, who was not authorized to comment on the issue and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Sharon Osbourne had tweeted two weeks ago that she wanted to leave "America's Got Talent," but gave no explanation other than saying it wasn't an issue of money. She remains under contract with the talent contest, the summer's top-rated series.

Sony Unveils New God of War, Infamous Collections

ps collections

Over on the PlayStation Blog, Sony has revealed two new collected editions of past successful franchises, God of War and Infamous. This confirms a rumor from last week that an HD collection of God of War was on its way, including the first three games in the series as well as HD versions of two PSP titles from the franchise. The PS Blog posting says the collection will include those five games and more, including ?exclusive bonus content,? as well as a free month of PS Plus service.

The Infamous collection will have the first two games, as well as ?Festival of Blood? DLC, and extra missions. The best part of all is that the two collections come out for the PlayStation 3 on August 28, and will cost a measly $29.99. That?s awesome for me, considering I?ve never actually sat down and gotten through any of the God of War games. Thirty bucks for five hit games? Yes please.

The finale in Christopher Nolan's epic Batman trilogy has now made nearly $355 million domestically alone, according to Sunday estimates from Warner Bros.

"Total Recall," starring Colin Farrell in a new version of the thriller that helped solidify Arnold Schwarzenegger as an action star in 1990, opened in second place with $26 million, Columbia Pictures said.

And the Fox family comedy "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days" debuted at No. 3 with $14.7 million.

40 months and counting: Baseball committee -- again -- secretly meets with both San Jose and Oakland

Even as Major League Baseball remains mum -- after 40 months -- about the prospect of an Oakland A's move to the South Bay, its high-level committee reviewing the A's future quietly met last week with leaders in both San Jose and the East Bay.

As is customary in the discussions of the committee, appointed by Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, public officials were made to promise not to divulge the content of the meetings. But observers speculated that after about a dozen years of scrutinizing ideas for new stadiums in Oakland and Fremont, yet another new iteration of the keep-the-A's-in-Oakland theme has been crafted.

In addition to city and county leaders, the East Bay meeting reportedly included developer Michael Ghielmetti and Clorox CEO Don Knauss, who has repeatedly suggested that A's owner Lew Wolff and co-owner John Fisher should sell the team to someone who will keep it in Oakland. Wolff has repeatedly said he and Fisher have no intention of selling their franchise.

"That has as much credibility as our group trying to acquire Clorox," Wolff fired back Sunday, as he prepared to board his private jet and return home to Los Angeles after a Saturday game that drew just 17,121 fans to O.co Coliseum. "It's just a sound bite."

San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed said he met for one hour Tuesday with the baseball committee at its request. In attendance was the mayor's chief of staff, Pete Furman, and the

city leaders faced Corey Busch, Irwin Raij and Bob Starkey (the MLB "blue ribbon" committee). Also attending was Brad Ruskin, a sports industry lawyer with expertise in antitrust issues.

While Reed also refused to reveal the exact discussion, he did comment that the other meeting with Oakland and Alameda County officials doesn't worry him. "Lew Wolff wants to move to San Jose," he said. "The A's believe they will be profitable in San Jose."

The city has offered the A's an option on downtown land near the HP Arena to build a $500 million state-of-the-art stadium.

Another proposal?

Wolff wasn't invited to either meeting -- baseball's committee does its work independently. But when asked how word of the secret meeting leaked out, Wolff said it did not come from him or, he speculated, from Oakland city officials. The organization with a clear stake in the outcome is the San Francisco Giants. The team has refused to cede its territorial rights to the South Bay.

What's unknown is whether the meetings finally presage a decision by Major League Baseball on whether the A's will be allowed to move to San Jose. For that to happen, three-quarters of MLB team owners would have to vote to force the San Francisco Giants to cede their territorial rights.

Almost no one wants the A's to stay exactly where they are now, in the sagging Coliseum. But one of the surprises that seemed to move the needle back in Oakland's direction -- according to a rumor on SFGate.com -- was a presentation by Mayor Jean Quan, City Administrator Deanna Santana, Alameda County Board of Supervisors President Nate Miley and City Council President Larry Reid. They are believed to have told the committee about another plan: a waterfront ballpark site at the Port of Oakland's Howard Terminal -- a proposal long thought to have been discarded in favor of a project dubbed Coliseum City.

Both Wolff and Reed dismissed the report about Howard Terminal. A development there or nearby could make surrounding new retail and housing development more profitable.

"We have analyzed Howard Terminal upside down and sideways," Wolff said, "and it has no ability to be implemented for a ballpark."

State investigators

It doesn't matter what rival East Bay site might be proposed, San Jose spokeswoman Michelle McGurk said. "Oakland has come up with so many different plans, it's not worth our time to keep track of them."

In San Jose, the meeting took place even as California Controller John Chiang was investigating whether the city illegally moved funds from the city's dismantled redevelopment agency to buy land for a ballpark. Reed acknowledged that Chiang's investigators have been looking into the city's records for about two weeks.

Jacob Roper of the Controller's Office confirmed last week that his office was reviewing the transfer of redevelopment agency funds in several cities, including San Jose and Santa Clara.

Wolff said the possibility that the team might have to pay for the land in San Jose if the city can't, "is not relevant to us. It's insignificant to the cost of the ballpark." He also discounted the possibility that a better development deal in Oakland would renew his interest in staying put. "We have no ancillary real estate we're looking at in San Jose," he said. "We're just talking about building a ballpark."

Meanwhile, Reed said, the city is waiting for baseball owners to lift the territorial restrictions to permit an A's move south. He said he had no insight when that might happen. "Whatever they're doing is a mystery to me," he said. "That's truly inside baseball."

Son of Philadephia Eagles Coach Andy Reid found dead

Garrett Reid, the troubled 29-year-old son of Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid, was found dead Sunday in a dorm room at the club's Lehigh University training camp, where he spent most of his summers with his father.

Police in Bethlehem, Pa., said the death was not suspicious, and the cause was under investigation. The coach's oldest son had a long history of drug problems, once admitting "I liked being a drug dealer" and went to prison for a heroin-fueled car crash.

Reid's death stunned the Eagles, who gathered for a team prayer before a morning walkthrough.

"This is a very difficult situation for us all," quarterback Michael Vick said after practice ? their first without their head coach in five years.

Owner Jeffery Lurie met with the team Sunday and told reporters afterward he expected Reid back this week. The Eagles host Pittsburgh in their preseason opener on Thursday night.

"There's choices to be made when tragedy happens," Lurie said, pausing to hold back tears. "You can become stronger and even more focused and learn from it and treat life as a challenge, or you can bow down. And Andy is somebody ? he said to me, 'I'm going to hit that curveball and hit it out of the park' ? and on the field and off the field. And that's the message he wanted me to have."

The police chief at Lehigh, Edward Shupp, said a 911 call was made at 7:20 a.m. about Reid, and that the 29-year-old was dead when a policeman arrived at the campus dormitory. The police and Northampton County coroner were investigating.

Shupp said "there were no suspicious activities." Police didn't return later telephone calls for comment, and didn't say who found Garrett Reid or whether any clues to his death were found in his room.

Reid had been staying at the camp where he assisted the Eagles' strength coaches at camp in an unofficial capacity, a not-uncommon sort of role for NFL coaches' sons. He was frequently seen on the sideline at practices and in the locker room after games. Many of the coaches and staff stay in the Lehigh dorms.

Kolb hurt in Hall of Fame game

Drew Brees led New Orleans to a touchdown on his only series as the Saints beat the Arizona Cardinals, 17-10, at Canton, Ohio, in the Hall of Fame exhibition game, officiated by a crew with college experience.

Arizona quarterback Kevin Kolb had a pass intercepted and left with bruised ribs, hurting his chances of winning the starting job.

The game was canceled last year for the first time in 45 years because of the NFL's lockout of players. Labor issues also came into play in Sunday night's game ? the seven officials were replacements.

Etc.

Defensive end Cliff Avril reported to camp after signing his tender. He will make $10.6 million this season as franchise-tagged player. ... Minnesota Vikings rookie receiver Greg Childs suffered patella tendon tears in both knees and is expected to undergo surgery soon. ... A day after leaving practice a few minutes early because a teammate stepped on his foot during a drill, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger did not practice Sunday. ... Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt is scheduled to meet with league officials Monday in regard to his being charged with driving under the influence July 20 as he attempted to pass through a security gate at the Fort Campbell Army installation on the Tennessee-Kentucky state line. ... Oakland Raiders cornerback Ron Bartell, who was out with a broken neck in 2011, was removed from the non-football related injury list and expects to play in the team's Aug. 13 exhibition opener against Dallas, but he will have to wait three days before being cleared to fully practice.

A Simple Process For Picking A Suitable Dementia Residential Home

Posted by drewloupsen on Sunday, August 5, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

If your loved one has been diagnosed with dementia, you have probably learned to accept the inevitable truth that at one point or another they will no longer be able to live independently. It may well be the time for you to capitulate to the idea of dementia care homes.

It becomes increasingly frustrating to see a loved one become less and less aware of who you are in their life and even become disoriented, not having a sense of where they are. Family members are often unable to provide the necessary care to the dementia patient due to other responsibilities, such as jobs and children, for instance.

Also, a lot of family members may think they are ill-equipped in terms of training to carry on the task of caring for the dementia patient. This is when dementia care homes and professional care becomes a necessity.

What are the things you should consider when making your decision as to which dementia care facility is best for the patient?

Depending on the effects the disease has, find out the kind of care that fits to the patient?s needs. If the patient only requires ordinary care or assistance, any care home can provide those needs; if the patient needs specialized medical care, then be sure that there are medical specialists in the care home that are qualified to handle the issue.

Consider the budget before making the final decision. Although some facilities may demand huge fees, there are dementia care homes that are government funded. Do a comparative cost analysis of several possible choices prior to picking one.

As explained on the parkinson?s disease care website, you should inquire about amenities and examine services purportedly offered by the home. It is advisable to physically go and inspect the dementia care home being considered. On top of structure and environmental considerations, make sure that the employees display a lot of dedication and endurance in caring for the patient and providing their needs.

Find out if there are meaningful activities that can create feelings of self worth and reinforce the patient?s sense of identity. A care home that truly looks after the well-being of the patient should try to maintain the dignity of the patient and encourage independence where possible. Activities don?t need to be structurally planned; activities can be as simple as board games or playing with cards. The point is to organize activities that are motivating but not intense.

Find a care home that is in your area. Convincing a patient to live in a care facility can be a real challenge for several reasons, among the most prevalent of which is their anxiety that they won?t see their loved ones anymore. If the care home is close to where most of the family members live; then there?s every possibility that you and other family members may visit the patient more often.

Self Help Advice That Can Help Change Your Life | Tourism Articles

If you are looking to improve your life by utilizing personal development strategies make the decision to read a book on personal development. Make yourself read from the book every single day. Even if you are only to read a few pages each day you will be a lot farther ahead than someone who has never read the book at all.

Use other people to help you further your personal development. It can be difficult to succeed on your own and other people can sometimes give you motivation and advice that you can?t give yourself. So, in order to achieve your life goals, make sure you enlist the support of your peers.

It is important to feel like you have a purpose in life. You can do this by reaching out to others that need your help. It can help you to take your mind off of your own problems and help someone else through theirs. It also gives you a different way to look at things.

Practice forgiveness. No one is perfect, and it is easy sometimes instead of looking at our own faults to point out others and hold grudges. Many things can happen to us that are hard to forgive, but forgiveness was given to us free, and we should definitely freely give it to others.

Get more done in your life by setting personal goals for yourself to achieve. Try writing them down in a plan and write how you plan to achieve them. There is no requirement on how many or how large or small the goals need to be; they should just pertain to what you want to achieve.

Identify clear goals! Being able to enunciate your goals is one of the first steps to achieving them. Whether your focus is losing weight or learning to sing, you must clearly identify in your mind what they are. By clearly identifying your goals you enhance your chances of achieving them.

There are many different breathing techniques you can use in order to relieve stress. Try the different breathing methods and find one that works for you and helps you the best. You will soon find this is a great way to manage your stress.

Don?t procrastinate! Even when a task that is awaiting your attention is one of the most distasteful imaginable, in most instances you?ll suffer more by putting it off than in just going ahead and doing it. File that request for extension with the IRS and you?ll be worrying about doing your taxes for six months more than if you just did them on time in the first place!

Knowing where you should improve is valuable information to obtain. Many times you may see that your attitude needs adjusting or your values may be shifting. The key here is to recognize whether or not these are based on a lack of fundamental principles within. Get to the deeper roots of your development and assess the needs you may have at your core.

Spend some time learning about what you really enjoy doing. You can then incorporate this into your personal development. Once you know what you enjoy and have fun with, you can use this to look at personal development not as such a daunting task, but one that will allow you to have a little more fun in your life.

Acceptance of failure is a necessity of personal growth. Try as we might, we don?t always succeed. So one needs to be able to deal with failure. That means accepting that things did not go as planned and refusing to allow that fact to impede one?s progress. Look honestly at the factors that led to the failure and find a way to go forward in spite of the set back.

Ask your friends and family for honest, positive feedback on your character. Earnestly requesting feedback is much different from simply fishing for compliments. Explain that you need help discovering things about yourself that make you a good friend, or what you could work on to become a more reliable and supportive friend.

Journal every day about what you have accomplished that day. Include even those things you do every day such as reading to your children, cooking the family meal, working a couple hours overtime or doing your budget. When you see your accomplishments you are motivated to continue working hard on personal development.

In all aspects of the self-help process, it is extremely important not to get too discouraged with yourself. Your road to improvement is a marathon, not a short-distance race. You would do well to remind yourself of this fact every once in awhile. Understand that there are going to be bumps along the road.

As you can see, these tips will really help you on your path of personal development. These tips will help guide you as you face the ups and downs of making the changes you need to make to develop the new and improved you. So do not hold back anymore and just get started.
