Vanguard ? Warren Buffett and the feminine side of investing

LouAnn Lofton

Are there differences in the way men and women invest? And, if so, which gender has the advantage?

Ask LouAnn Lofton, author of Warren Buffett Invests Like a Girl: And Why You Should, Too, and you'll get an interesting answer: advantage, women.?

How so? And why is Warren Buffett a shining example of the way women invest??

To find out, we interviewed Ms. Lofton, who is also a contributing writer for The Motley Fool, a financial education company, and a former managing editor there.?

Question:?You started investing when you were quite young. How did that come about??

Ms. Lofton:?I wasn't interested in investing growing up and we didn?t talk about it in our house. But my Dad passed away when I was 14, and I knew that when I turned 21, I would get a little money as an inheritance.?

It wasn't going to be a life-changing amount, but it was enough that I didn't want to mess up the opportunity and disappoint him. So I decided to learn about investing and started doing so after I graduated from high school.?

Question:?How did you approach investing??

Ms. Lofton: I started reading books on investing, and one of the earliest ones I stumbled across was a book about Warren Buffett.?

I had never heard of him, but I was taken with his story of being a small-town, Nebraska guy who worked his way up, had created a fortune, but was still humble. I was also taken with the way he invests.?

I had read about investing with technical analysis and charts, and it all sounded so complicated. But when I saw that Mr. Buffett doesn't try to time the market, that he doesn?t rely on computers, that he researches the companies he will invest in, that he only invests in quality companies, and invests for the long-run, I said to myself that was something I could do, too.?

It seemed safe and doable, and while?I didn't think it would turn me into one of the world's richest people overnight, I also knew I wouldn?t screw up and lose the money I'd inherited.?

Question:?Why did you write Warren Buffett Invests Like a Girl??

Ms. Lofton:?Although the book is for all investors, men and women?alike, I thought it was important for women to realize that they can and should start investing today because they have some attributes that can make them great long-term investors.?

Question:?Why is learning to invest especially important for women??

Ms. Lofton: According to?a statistic cited in a December 2010 U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee report, by age 64 the average woman will have?missed out on $430,000, attributable just to the pay gap between?what?men?earn?and?what women?earn over their working lifetimes.??

Women tend to go into retirement with?retirement account balances that are half of those of men. On average, according to a 2008 report from the Retirement Security Project of the Brookings Institution, women retire with $34,000 in their retirement accounts, while men's accounts, on average, are worth $70,000.?

Women need to recognize the unique challenges we face and be ready to confront them. They also need to be realistic and more proactive about investing and not think that someday someone's going to come along like Prince Charming and make it all OK.?

The time to start thinking about your economic future and security is right now. Don't wait.?

Question:?Do you think that women tend to shy away from investing??

Ms. Lofton:?I believe a lot of women might be intimidated about investing. Just the other night I was talking to a friend of mine, a really smart woman with a master's degree in psychology, who owns her own home, has it all together, basically. She told me that the idea of investing scares her to death. I hear this all the time.?

Question:?And yet your book's thesis is that women can be very good investors.?

Ms. Lofton:?Yes, absolutely. In my book I refer to several studies, including a ground-breaking study by two University of California researchers and one by Vanguard, that show that women, at times, may have qualities that make them better investors then men.*?

Question: What might those qualities be??

Ms. Lofton:?One is that women are not as likely to panic in bad markets as men.?

The Vanguard study I cited in the book analyzed 2.7 million IRA investors saving for retirement.?

It showed that during the financial panic of 2008 and 2009, men, more than women, were likely to sell stocks at the bottom of the market. That meant that the men locked in their losses and probably missed out on the market recovery that ultimately came.?

The thing to do in a down market is what Warren Buffett does, which is to have a shopping list ready for when stocks or funds are cheaper. That is a tough lesson to learn, but in the long term it will be rewarded.

Studies also show that women tend not to be as confident as men in making investing decisions. Men actually tend to be overconfident when it comes to investing, according to the studies.?

Women's tendency to be less confident means that they are more likely to do more research than men?before making investing decisions.?

And once women have made an investing decision, they are into their investments for the long haul.?

That is very reminiscent of Warren Buffett and the calm, long-term way he has been investing for decades and decades. See? Warren Buffett really does invest like a girl!?

Question:?Any other attributes that may be helping women investors??

Ms. Lofton:?In my book I mention a study** by?Joan MacLeod Heminway of the University of Tennessee College of Law in which she summarizes much of the research on the differences between men and women investors.*?

She concludes that women investors may be less optimistic than men.?

Question:?Why is that a good thing??

Ms. Lofton: I think that being overly optimistic can get you into trouble because you tend to think that you know all you need to know and that can stop you from asking questions or more questions about your investing ideas.

When it comes to investing, you should consider figuring out what information you may be missing, rather than why you are right.

Question:?How does attitude toward risk influence investing decisions by men and women??

In the book I point out that the study by the two University of California researchers showed, in their words, "that women tend to hold less risky positions than men in their common-stock portfolios."?

Other studies have shown that generally women are more risk averse.?

We can't eliminate risk from investing altogether, but not taking on more risk than is absolutely necessary can really help you preserve capital over the long run.?

Just sticking to the tried and true method of investing carefully and thoughtfully for the long run, rather than getting caught up in the latest crazy short-term trading strategy or investment fad will serve risk-averse investors well.?

Question:?When women invest do they make fewer mistakes then men??

Ms. Lofton:?All investors make mistakes, but women may be more willing to learn from their mistakes.?

In the book I mention a Merrill Lynch Investment Managers poll of 500 men and 500 women investors. Of the men, 24% admitted they were likely to buy a so-called hot investment without doing research, but only 13% of the women said they would do so.?

More tellingly, 63% of the men admitted they would do the same thing again, but only 47% of the women said they would.?

The most important thing you can do when you have made a mistake is to learn what you have done wrong. And women may be more willing to ask, "What?did I miss?"?when they make a mistake.?

You see the same willingness to admit mistakes in Warren Buffett's year-end shareholder letters, where he will take himself to task over his investment decisions that were wrong.

Question:?Any final thoughts??

Ms. Lofton:?These principles?controlling your emotions, doing research, and so on?can make everyone, men and women, better investors.

Men may trade too much, but women should consider that at least the men are giving investing a go. Men may want to consider that when they invest, they may be better off thinking long term.?

And if you are in a relationship, each of your investing traits can balance each other, and you could have a great investment outcome if you work together.?

Notes:?

?All investing is subject to risk.?

Mass rallies celebrate freed Palestinian prisoners (AP)

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip ? Tens of thousands of flag-waving Palestinians celebrated the homecoming Tuesday of hundreds of prisoners swapped for an Israeli soldier, as political leaders jockeyed for credit for the most significant prisoner release by Israel in nearly three decades.

In downtown Gaza City, Hamas organized a homecoming celebration that turned into a show of strength by the Islamic militant group, which seized control of Gaza from its rival, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, more than four years ago. Tens of thousands crammed into a sandy lot, where a huge stage was set up, decorated with a mural depicting Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit's capture in a June 2006 at an army base near the Gaza border. Thousands hoisted green Hamas flags.

A majority of the 477 prisoners freed Tuesday, in exchange for Schalit, had been serving life terms for killing Israelis, and their release violated a long-standing Israeli pledge not to free those with "blood on their hands." Schalit was captured more than five years ago by Hamas-allied militants, and Gaza's Hamas rulers negotiated the swap, with Egyptian mediation.

More than 300 of the prisoners arrived in Gaza, the rest in the West Bank. Mass celebration rallies were under way in both of the Palestinian territories.

One of the released Hamas leaders, Yehiye Sinwar, called on the group's military wing to kidnap more Israeli soldiers in order to free the remaining prisoners in Israeli jails. Several thousand are still held by Israel on a range of security offenses.

"We shall spare no efforts to liberate the rest of our brothers and sisters," Sinwar told Hamas' al-Aqsa TV. "We urge the Al Qassam Brigades (the Hamas military wing) to kidnap more soldiers to exchange them for the freedom of our loved ones who are still behind bars," said Sinwar, one of the founders of the Hamas military wing. He had had been sentenced to life in prison for his role in the kidnapping and killing of two Israeli soldiers.

Many in the crowd were overcome with joy.

Azhar Abu Jawad, 30, celebrated the return of a brother who had been sentenced to life for killing an Israeli in 1992. She said she last saw him eight years ago, before Israel banned visits by Gazans.

"My happiness is indescribable," she said. "We'll get him a bride and everything. I just spoke to him. He's so happy. This is a reminder, God doesn't forget anyone."

In Ramallah, Abbas addressed a crowd of thousands, included released prisoners and their relatives. In an attempt at unity, he shared a stage with three Hamas leaders in the West Bank. At one point, the four men even raised clasped hands in a show of victory.

Still, Abbas is likely to suffer politically as a result of the swap. Over years of negotiating with Israel, he has only been able to bring about the release of those who had little time left on their sentences. Tuesday's swap, with many "lifers" among the released prisoners, is the most significant since Israel released hundreds of Palestinians in 1985.

In his speech, Abbas praised the released prisoners as "freedom fighters" and suggested that his method of negotiations was also bearing fruit.

"I am revealing to you ... that there is an agreement between us and the Israeli government on another batch (of releases) similar to this batch after it finishes," Abbas said.

His comments marked the first time he referred to an additional prisoner release, and there was no immediate Israeli comment.

Earlier Tuesday, hundreds of relatives of prisoners had waited at a West Bank checkpoint for a first glimpse at their loved ones. However, the buses carrying the prisoners were instead driven directly to Abbas' headquarters in the West Bank.

Clashes erupted between about 200 young Palestinians at the checkpoint and Israeli soldiers several hundred yards (meters) away, after the families were told they had waited in the wrong place. Israeli troops fired tear gas and Palestinians threw stones for about half an hour. Some of the young men climbed atop a separation fence near the checkpoint and draped it with flags of Hamas and Abbas' Fatah movement.

Insight: Running Chinese finance, a different kind of banker (Reuters)

HONG KONG/BEIJING (Reuters) ? The chairman of the world's most valuable bank was once a good communist, learning from the peasants in a collectivist commune in Jiangxi province and working to raise coal production as a teenage miner in Henan during the tumult of Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution.

Today, Jiang Jianqing has a somewhat bigger job: running the world's biggest bank, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China.

But he does the work for an annual salary that might make a hardened socialist nod with approval. He earned $150,000 in 2010, a mere 1.5 percent of Bank of America Corp CEO Brian Moynihan's estimated $10 million pay last year, and half again smaller than the $20 million Jamie Dimon was paid for running JP Morgan.

Like those of his peers at other Chinese banks, Jiang's salary has consistently fallen in the past four years, from about $240,000 in 2008, and he himself said in Hong Kong last year that he hoped his pay cheque would stop shrinking.

"We can't be paid more than the regulators who oversee us," Jiang explained last year when asked about the matter. "If the regulators have to take a pay cut, we will take a pay cut as well."

China's "Big Four" lenders are back in the spotlight as China's economy starts to absorb the impact of a global slowdown.

Last week Central Huijin, a unit of the $400 billion sovereign wealth fund China Investment Corp, began buying shares in the banks -- ICBC, China Construction Bank, Agricultural Bank of China and Bank of China -- to prop up their share prices and reassure domestic investors.

PARTY JOBS

As Jiang's example shows, China's top bank bosses are a different breed to their Western counterparts. Beneath their coiffured hair and tailored suits, the likes of CCB Chairman Guo Shuqing and ICBC's Jiang are first and foremost Communist Party members appointed to their jobs by the government.

China's biggest financial institutions fall under the supervision of the Communist Party, so the bank heads also sit on the party's Central Committee that is ultimately headed by the country's President Hu Jintao.

As China prepares for a 2012 leadership transition that will see the retirement of Hu and Premier Wen Jiabao from their party posts, many of the bankers will also see themselves rotated into new jobs.

The Party connections of the Big Four executives raise questions about who, exactly, they work for.

"Who are you trying to impress? You're not trying to impress your shareholders, you're trying to impress party seniors," says Patrick Chovanec, associate professor at Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management in Beijing.

"After you complete your tour at a bank, you will be assigned to a new tour of duty, usually in a government posting."

That bureaucratic outlook has been fully apparent in the banks' actions over the years. Directed by the state to funnel money into government-linked companies, banks were saddled with non-performing loan ratios exceeding 20 percent by the early 2000s.

Beijing bought out most of those bad loans as the banks prepared for their public listings. They have kept a fairly clean record since, but many, including Credit Suisse and Fitch Ratings, warn that bad loans may soon start creeping up again.

LENDING SPREE

Credit Suisse analyst Sanjay Jain said in a report on Wednesday he now thinks that up to 12 percent of all of China's outstanding loans may go bad and non-performing loans may likely account for all of the banks' equity. Current NPL ratios hover at around 1 percent for the top Chinese banks.

This comes after banks went on a lending spree during the global financial crisis in 2008 and 2009, spurred on by Beijing's 4 trillion yuan ($627 billion) call to boost the economy.

Much of that money went to the railway ministry, local governments that set up financing vehicles to fund their pet projects and real estate developers.

All three are in potential trouble now, with the China's railway ministry under public pressure after a high profile train crash, local governments largely barred from borrowing from banks and property prices in danger of collapsing.

Despite all that, banks have reported strong earnings in the past year that often beat expectations. This may be a result of them putting less cash into the kitty to prepare for loans that may go sour.

"This is unlike the late 1990s when the government forced the banks to admit to a huge amount of non-performing loans. This time round, the strategy is just to not admit to NPLs," said Victor Shih, a professor at Northwestern University in Chicago who has written a book on China's financial system.

RED BUSINESSMEN

Many of the executives running China's banks may have accepted salaries their Western counterparts would disdain in return for the future political appointments that may further their influence, said Northwestern's Shih.

For example, the current governor of the Chinese central bank, Zhou Xiaochuan, and Vice Premier Wang Qishan were both previously head of CCB, the country's No.2 lender.

ICBC's Jiang is rumoured to be in the running to head China's bank regulatory commission, while CCB's Guo is tipped as possibly the next head of the central bank, of which he was previously a vice governor.

"Many of them are aspiring politicians, and being a bank CEO is merely a stepping stone in their careers," Shih said. "Thus, they are willing to accept lower pay."

Guo Shuqing, chairman of the world's No.2 lender China Construction Bank, is a philosophy graduate who completed his Master's degree in the 1980s in one of the more fashionable areas of study at that time: Marxist and Leninist theory.

His career path typifies the circuitous route of the senior Chinese bureaucrat/businessman -- he was previously vice-governor of Guizhou province, head of Central Huijin, director of the State Administration on Foreign Exchange and a deputy governor of the central bank before being named head of CCB.

Many of these executives were given their jobs after political appointments -- Guo in Guizhou and Bank of China Vice Chairman Li Lihui who was vice-governor of the southern island province of Hainan.

Others also had regulatory roles, with AgBank's low-profile Chairman Xiang Junbo having once worked at the National Audit Office and Bank of China's Li at a local branch of the country's central bank.

The irony is not lost on China-watchers, some of whom say that for all of China's claims of being a market-oriented economy, many of its biggest companies retain strong relationships with the government.

"It's all decided by the personnel department of the Communist Party," said Tsinghua's Chovanec.

"These postings should be seen as precisely that, they are postings to give them experience and put them in management roles," he said. "These are not traditional banking paths."

And unlike most other executives where job-hopping between companies is common, few top Chinese executives have ever made the jump from the world of state-backed lending to foreign-run banks or financial services companies, despite the promise of higher salaries.

"It could make a lot of sense if knows the American system," said a former senior Chinese banker who knows CCB's Guo personally.

"But I think when you're that high in the system and then have to work for a foreigner -- I don't think China's ready for that kind of switch yet."

Rapper Rick Ross tweets he's OK after health scare (AP)

MIAMI ? Rapper Rick Ross tweeted Friday afternoon that he will still perform in Memphis, Tenn., later in the evening despite a medical emergency hours earlier that caused the plane he was aboard to return to Florida so he could be taken to the hospital.

"Memphis here I come," Ross declared on his official Twitter account Friday afternoon.

Ross is scheduled to perform Friday night at the University of Memphis basketball team's midnight opening practice event. Calls to his publicist have not been returned.

At about 1 p.m., about four hours before his tweet, Ross was on a Delta Air Lines flight from Fort Lauderdale to Memphis when he suffered an unspecified medical problem. The flight, carrying 121 passengers, returned to Fort Lauderdale.

Mike Jachles, a spokesman for Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, said the flight landed at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and was met by paramedics. They performed what Jachles called "advanced life-support care," though it did not include CPR.

Jachles could not specify what exact care Ross was given, but said he was stable, breathing, conscious and alert.

The 34-year-old Ross was in a seat when paramedics reached him and he then walked off the plane, Jachles said. He was taken to a terminal area where he was evaluated before being transported to a hospital to be checked out.

Jachles said there was a doctor on the plane who had tried to assist Ross, though he could not say what, if anything, the doctor did.

"Nobody told us, either when we were advised, dispatched or on the scene, no mention was made of CPR being initiated or in progress," Jachles said.

Soon after going to the hospital, Ross contacted Memphis to tell them he was still coming.

"He called a member of our staff and said not to believe what's out there and that he's on his way to perform at Memphis Madness," said Lamar Chance, a university athletics department spokesman.

The Miami-based gangsta rapper gained fame with his husky voice and lyrics that spotlighted the grimier side of Miami life. He has become one of rap's most popular figures in recent years.

Ross, whose real name is William Leonard Roberts II, has a new album titled "God Forgives, I Don't," due out in December.

The hefty rapper's hits include "Aston Martin Music," "B.M.F. (Blowing Money Fast)" and "Hustlin'."

No verdict in Conn. home invasion trial on day 1 (AP)

NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? A jury began deliberations Wednesday in the trial of a man cast by prosecutors as the mastermind of a brutal attack on a family inside their suburban home following weeks of grisly testimony that left some jurors fighting back tears.

Joshua Komisarjevsky, a paroled burglar, could join his co-defendant on Connecticut's death row if convicted in the attack, in which family members were tied up and left to die in a house fire. While Komisarjevsky has blamed his co-defendant for killing the family, prosecutors said Komisarjevsky was the leader.

Jurors deliberated for about four hours and will resume on Thursday.

A judge denied an effort Wednesday by Komisarjevsky's attorneys to reopen their defense based on letters from co-defendant Steven Hayes claiming he had committed numerous murders in the past. They cited letters from Hayes saying he killed 17 people in the Northeast and committed dozens of drugged date rapes. A prosecutor called the letters unreliable.

Authorities say Komisarjevsky and Hayes broke into a home in Cheshire, Conn., in 2007, beat Dr. William Petit with a bat, tied him and his family up and forced his wife to withdraw money from a bank. The house was doused in gas and set on fire, leading to the girls' deaths from smoke inhalation.

Hayes was convicted last year of raping and strangling Jennifer Hawke-Petit and killing her daughters. In his case, jurors deliberated for about five hours over two days before finding him guilty. He is on death row.

Komisarjevsky's trial began Sept. 19 and featured grim evidence, including rope used to bind the family and autopsy photos.

After a little more than an hour of deliberations, jurors sent the judge a note asking, "When giving the verdict, do we need to specify if we have found him guilty as a principal or an accessory?"

Judge Jon Blue said jurors don't have to specify and that if they find him guilty of a charge, they don't need to be unanimous on whether they believe he's an accessory or principal.

Blue denied a motion for a mistrial by Komisarjevsky's attorneys, who said a prosecution expert sitting close to jurors rolled her eyes seven times in disbelief during defense closing arguments. Blue did call jurors out from the deliberations room to caution them that any facial expressions by spectators are not evidence and should be disregarded.

The letters came to light just before closing arguments Tuesday in New Haven Superior Court. Komisarjevsky's attorneys say the letters could help their arguments that Hayes orchestrated the crime.

But Blue said the claims were not corroborated and would actually hurt Komisarjevsky's case because of claims Hayes makes in the letters about the Connecticut crime. Testimony is reopened to avoid miscarriages of justice, he said.

Hayes' claims, if true, would make him one of the worst serial killers in American history. But Blue said the claims were vague, with no dates, locations or other details.

"It certainly means there is no real corroboration of this," he said.

Spokesmen for the FBI and Connecticut state police declined to comment Wednesday on whether their agencies are looking into Hayes' murder and rape claims. The state Department of Correction declined a request by The Associated Press to release copies of Hayes' letters, citing Blue's gag order in the case.

The judge said Hayes would only invoke his Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination if called to testify. He said the letters blame Komisarjevsky for much of the home invasion.

"This would be the seal of Mr. Komisarjevsky's doom," Blue said.

He also denied a defense motion for a mistrial based on comments prosecutors made during closing arguments.

Cadillac unveils CUE infotainment system for connected driving excitement in 2012 (video)

Cadillac may be an unlikely exhibitor for a mobile conference, but it is using CTIA as an opportunity to unveil the Cadillac User Experience (CUE). CUE is its new car infotainment system that will debut next year, first in the XTS and later in the ATS, before spreading to the company's entire line. It combines an eight-inch capacitive multitouch LCD and haptic feedback with proximity sensors for a more rewarding user experience. Touch isn't the only input that Cadillac is quite proud of, as CUE also includes voice recognition technology from Nuance. This means users should be able to interact with their phone and car stereo without ever taking their eyes off the road.

Gallery: Cadillac CUE

Remarkably, CUE has ties to the Linux Foundation and it is based on the namesake operating system. It's built on a tri-core ARM 11 CPU that simultaneously chews through 3D navigation maps and displays BluRay in the backseat with aplomb. Cadillac tells us that it has been working on this system for nearly two years, which supports Bluetooth 3.0, and also adds connectivity with two USB ports and an SD card slot. The folks at Caddy also hinted that more third-party apps will eventually be part of the story, but those details will be revealed further down the road. That said, the CUE already supports Pandora, Stitcher and provides an HTML5-based browser with full JavaScript support. The company also provided a video tour of its latest wonder, which you'll be able to see in greater detail after the break along with the press release.
