Russia Not Training Enough Military Pilots: Minister

Moscow, Dec 8 (IANS/RIA Novosti): The Russian Air Force is not training sufficient numbers of pilots and other specialists, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said.

"The quantity of pilots and other specialists being trained for the air force is insufficient," Shoigu said, adding he would pay special attention to the issue.

"We need to take measures to solve this. I want to stress that optimizing our military training system is one of the defence ministry's main tasks."

The Russian Air Force is in the midst of a major re-equipment programme, with hundreds of new airplanes and helicopters being introduced to replace obsolete and worn-out Soviet-era aircraft.

The force will receive around 180 new planes and helicopters by the end of the year, the Air Force Commander-in-Chief Major General Viktor Bondarev said in August.

Speaking earlier this year on the force's 100th anniversary, President Vladimir Putin promised the air force would get 600 new planes and 1,000 helicopters by 2020.

The training system has fallen into decline however, according to air force personnel.

Russia's top-heavy demographic profile has left it with a large percentage of older pilots who are now retiring. Thousands were made redundant in the last 20 years as the air force was downsized following the end of the Cold War.

SwimmingWorld.TV Video: North Texas Two Step With Brett Ringgold, Jonathan Roberts

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, December 7. IT was a strong evening for the North Texas Nadadores as the team demonstrated range with wins in the men's 50 and 500 frees at the U.S. Winter Short Course Junior Nationals.

Jonathan Roberts provided North Texas with the first win of the meet, claiming the junior national title in 4:21.33, dropping two seconds from his lifetime best of 4:23.97 set in the morning.

Roberts, meanwhile, talked about his race strategy of controlling the race in the middle-distance event by going out strong and holding on to win. He also looks forward to his mile later this weekend.

Brett Ringgold took home the splash-and-dash title with a meet record time of 19.73, as he touched out SwimMAC's Kyle Darmody (19.83) in the process. That swim beat the record of 19.82 that Bolles' Caeleb Dressel had set in relay duty earlier in the evening, that downed a 19.83 mark from Vlad Morozov.

Genetic data shows that skin cancer risk includes more than UV ...

Wednesday, December 5, 2012

It's common knowledge that excessive UV exposure from sunlight raises your chances for skin cancer, but predicting whether someone will actually develop skin cancer remains difficult. In a new research report, scientists from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the University of Wisconsin?Madison show that the risk for skin cancer involves numerous genetic factors including family history, ethnicity, and genetic variations specific to each individual. Using these factors, the researchers developed a more precise model for assessing risk, which is published in the December 2012 issue of the journal Genetics.

"We hope this study will ultimately contribute toward a better understanding of the genetics of complex traits and diseases," said Ana In?s V?zquez, PhD, lead author of the study from UAB's Department of Biostatistics. "Such an understanding is essential for the development of methods that can be used for early and improved prediction of genetic predisposition to diseases."

To make this discovery, the scientists used phenotypic and genetic information from more than 5,000 familial participants in the Framingham Heart Study to develop various models for assessing skin cancer risk. The researchers' most basic risk evaluation model included standard risk factors such as sex. Additional predictive models were developed by adding information on family history, ethnicity, and data from 41,000 genetic markers across the human genome. The predictive power of each model was evaluated, with the best prediction accuracy obtained from models that include all predictive risk factors -- those standard risk factors plus family history, ethnicity and genetic markers.

"Although there is no doubt that sun exposure increases your risk for skin cancer," said Mark Johnston, Editor-in-Chief of the journal Genetics, "it isn't clear how much of a risk it poses to each individual. This new model for assessing risk should prove useful to health care providers and public health officials, who play a crucial role in educating people about preventing skin cancer."

is this a bad time to invest in 401k? ? Roth IRA News

If you?re just starting out, you have a long time to retirement and very few things beat stocks over the long run. Think the most important thing is to get started rather than trying to figure the best time to enter the market ? experts can?t even do that very well.

Starting out, I?d be looking at stock mutual funds rather than stocks because of diversification ? I wouldn?t have the money to buy 100 shares of five or six stocks.

I used to be an investment analyst and my suggestion would be to keep the expert giving you advice on buys and sells separate (another company) from the person who does the trading for you so there is no conflict of interest, that he/she doesn?t make a recommendation and then get a commission on your trade.

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt descended into political turmoil on Wednesday over the constitution drafted by Islamist allies of President Mohammed Morsi, and at least 211 people were wounded as supporters and opponents battled each other with firebombs, rocks and sticks outside the presidential palace.

Four more presidential aides resigned in protest over Morsi's handling of the crisis, and a key opponent of the Islamist president likened Morsi's rule to that of ousted authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak.

Both sides were digging in for a long struggle, with the opposition vowing more protests and rejecting any dialogue unless the charter is rescinded, and Morsi pressing relentlessly forward with plans for a Dec. 15 constitutional referendum.

"The solution is to go to the ballot box," declared Mahmoud Ghozlan, a spokesman for Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, asserting the charter was "the best constitution Egypt ever had."

The clashes outside the presidential palace in Cairo's Heliopolis district marked an escalation in the deepening crisis. It was the first time supporters of rival camps fought each other since last year's anti-Mubarak uprising, when the authoritarian leader's loyalists sent sword-wielding supporters on horses and camels into Cairo's Tahrir square in what became one of the uprising's bloodiest days.

The large scale and intensity of the fighting marked a milestone in Egypt's rapidly entrenched schism, pitting Morsi's Brotherhood and ultra-conservative Islamists in one camp, against liberals, leftists and Christians in the other.

The violence spread to other parts of the country later Wednesday. Anti-Morsi protesters stormed and set ablaze the Brotherhood offices in Suez and Ismailia, east of Cairo, and there were clashes in the industrial city of Mahallah and the province of Menoufiyah in the Nile Delta north of the capital.

Compounding Morsi's woes, four of his advisers resigned, joining two other members of his 17-member advisory panel who have abandoned him since the crisis began.

Mohamed ElBaradei, a leading opposition reform advocate, said Morsi's rule was "no different" than Mubarak's.

"In fact, it is perhaps even worse," the Nobel Peace Prize laureate told a news conference after he accused the president's supporters of a "vicious and deliberate" attack on peaceful demonstrators outside the palace.

"Cancel the constitutional declarations, postpone the referendum, stop the bloodshed, and enter a direct dialogue with the national forces," he wrote on his Twitter account, addressing Morsi.

"History will give no mercy and the people will not forget."

The opposition is demanding that Morsi rescind the decrees giving him nearly unrestricted powers and shelve the controversial draft constitution the president's Islamist allies rushed through last week in a marathon, all-night session shown live on state TV.

Speaking at NATO in Brussels, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the unrest shows the urgent need for dialogue between Morsi's government and opposing voices on a constitutional path going forward.

"We call on all stakeholders in Egypt to settle their differences through democratic dialogue and we call on Egypt's leaders to ensure that the outcome protects the democratic promise of the revolution for all of Egypt's citizens," she said.

The huge scale of the opposition protests has dealt a blow to the legitimacy of the new charter, which Morsi's opponents contend allows religious authorities too much influence over legislation, threatens to restrict freedom of expression and opens the door to Islamist control over day-to-day life.

In addition, the country's powerful judges say they will not take on their customary role of overseeing the referendum. Zaghloul el-Balshi, secretary general of the state committee organizing the referendum, said on the private Al-Hayat television that he would not go ahead with preparations for the vote until the fighting stopped and Morsi rescinded his decrees.

The country's new attorney general, a Morsi appointee, hit back, ordering an investigation of Ahmed El-Zind, chairman of the judges' union that is spearheading the call for a boycott.

Wednesday's clashes began when thousands of Morsi's Islamist supporters descended on an area near the presidential palace where some 300 of his opponents were staging a sit-in. The Islamists, members of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, chased the protesters away from their base outside the palace's main gate and tore down their tents.

The protesters scattered into side streets, where they chanted anti-Morsi slogans as the Islamists shouted, "The people demand the implementation of God's law!"

After a brief lull, hundreds of Morsi opponents arrived and began throwing firebombs at the president's backers, who responded with rocks. The clashes continued well after nightfall and spread from the immediate vicinity of the palace to residential streets nearby.

The deployment of hundreds of riot police did not stop the fighting. The police later fired tear gas to disperse Morsi's opponents. Volunteers ferried the wounded on motorcycles to waiting ambulances, which rushed them to hospitals.

"I voted for Morsi to get rid of Hosni Mubarak. I now regret it," Nadia el-Shafie yelled at Brotherhood supporters on a side street.

"God is greater than you! Don't think this power or authority will add anything to you. God made this revolution, not you!" the tearful woman said as she was led away from the crowd of Islamists.

"May God protect Egypt and its president," read a banner hoisted atop a truck brought by the Islamists, as a man using a loudspeaker recited verses from the Quran.

"We came to support the president. We feel there is a legitimacy that someone is trying to rob," said Rabi Mohammed, a Brotherhood supporter. "People are rejecting democratic principles using thuggery."

The Islamists portrayed their attack on opposition protesters as defense of the revolution.

The clashes, said top Brotherhood leader Essam el-Erian, pitted "those who are protecting the legitimacy and the revolution against the counterrevolution and coup plotters."

Vice President Mahmoud Mekki called for a dialogue with the opposition to reach a consensus on disputed articles of the constitution, which he put at 15 out of a total of 234. The referendum must go ahead, he said, adding that he was acting in a personal capacity, not on behalf of Morsi.

Speaking to reporters, ElBaradei said there would be no dialogue unless Morsi rescinded his decrees and shelved the draft constitution.

Asked to comment on Mekki's offer, he said: "With all due respect, we don't deal with personal initiatives. If there is a genuine desire for dialogue, the offer must come from President Morsi."

Morsi's Nov. 22 decrees were followed last week by the constitutional panel pushing through the draft constitution without the participation of liberal and Christian members. Only four women, all Islamists, attended the session.

If the referendum goes ahead as scheduled and the draft constitution is adopted, elections for parliament's lawmaking lower chamber will be held in February.

Kid Gaming: How Young is Too Young to Play Games Like Call of ...

Usually I?m not one for writing somewhat super-serious posts like this, but this topic has come up far too often in my personal life recently. So now I wish to ask you, the readers, how young is too young to start playing games like Call of Duty?

Yeah, yeah, I know? this debate has been covered in various ways before. But what I just posted above is a plain and simple question. Keep in mind, I?m not talking about video games in general, but rather the intense fighting games that include either a) guns/explosives or b) copious amounts of gore.

You may be wondering where this question might have sparked from. You see, my girlfriend works with children on a daily basis. Recently she told me how her co-worker?s children were very upset because their Call of Duty: Black Ops II disc was scratched up and couldn?t be used anymore. I then ask her, ?Well? how old are these kids?? To which she tells me that they are 9 years old. Instantly I had a shocked face and simply replied, ?Well they shouldn?t be playing that game anyway.? But it?s the very next thing that she tells me that really shocks me. She then goes on to say, ?But they play it with their father.?

Now I don?t have any children of my own, so I can?t really comment on how it is to raise a child. All I can simply do is tell you how I wish to raise my own children, once that moment arrives. The fact that someone would let a 9 year old play a game like that (who is at most in what? the 3rd ?grade?) just seems reckless. Shouldn?t we all think that intense games like this will affect the way a child turns out? Hell, around that age I think I was playing games like Donkey Kong Country or something like that. Yes, I do acknowledge that we had games like Mortal Kombat back in the day. That game also got many parents up in arms. But still, how young is too young?

To me, I think a the youngest one should play violent games like that, would be around the 13-14 year old mark at the earliest. Throwing the development concerns aside, how many times have you been in a game lobby only to find out one of your fellow players is 6-9 years old? (Then of course quickly throwing on the mute button to not hear them anymore!) Also please keep in mind that I am not saying that video games alone are bad for kids of that age. The same can be said for TV shows, music, and even movies. If you are letting your 5 year old watch AMC?s The Walking Dead, there may be a problem.

I may get flamed on this post. Hell, I kind of expect it to happen. But I?m not trying to come off as some person on a high pedestal or something, like a lot of these anti-video game movement leaders do. Just simply trying to spark a debate, and see what you readers think about the matter. So go ahead and sound off in the comments.

Regulators clear Disney purchase of Lucasfilm

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal antitrust regulators have cleared Disney's $4 billion deal to buy Lucasfilm, the filmmaking empire behind the "Star Wars" franchise.

Notice of the clearance was issued Tuesday.

Representatives for The Walt Disney Co. and Lucasfilm Ltd. did not immediately respond to requests for comment. When the deal was announced in October, no formal closing date was announced.

The purchase stoked "Star Wars" fans because along with the surprise announcement, Disney said it would make sequels to the six-part series with plans to release the first in the next trilogy, Episode 7, in 2015.

Lucasfilm founder George Lucas is to receive about half of the $4.05 billion purchase price in cash and half in newly issued Disney shares. He has said he'd donate much of it to charity.

Genes link growth in the womb with adult metabolism and disease

ScienceDaily (Dec. 3, 2012) ? Researchers have identified four new genetic regions that influence birth weight, providing further evidence that genes as well as maternal nutrition are important for growth in the womb. Three of the regions are also linked to adult metabolism, helping to explain why smaller babies have higher rates of chronic diseases later in life.

It has been known for some time that babies born with a lower birth weight are at higher risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Three genetic regions have already been identified that influence birth weight, two of which are also linked to an increased susceptibility to type 2 diabetes.

The latest study analysed almost 70 000 individuals of European, Arab, Asian and African-American descent from across 50 separate studies of pregnancy and birth. Their findings confirmed the three regions previously identified and also revealed four new genetic regions that are associated with birth weight. The study was funded by the Wellcome Trust, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, the European Union, the Medical Research Council (UK), the Academy of Finland and the National Institutes of Health (USA).

One of the new genetic regions is also associated with blood pressure in adulthood, providing the first evidence of a genetic link between birth weight and blood pressure. Two of the regions are known to be linked to adult height, showing that genes involved in growth begin to take effect at a very early stage.

Professor Mark McCarthy, a co-author of the study from the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at Oxford, said: "Our findings add to the growing evidence that events during early growth in the womb can have a significant impact on our health as adults. However, these genes tell only part of the story. It's important that we understand how much is down to genetics and how much is due to the environment in which we grow so that we can target efforts to prevent disease later in life."

It's not clear how the genetic regions identified affect both birth weight and adult metabolism, although the findings do offer some clues about the biological pathways involved. For example, the two genetic regions linking birth weight with type 2 diabetes risk are also associated with reduced levels of insulin. Insulin is the hormone responsible for regulating sugar levels in the blood, but it is also known to have an important role in early growth.

Dr Rachel Freathy, co-lead author and a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellow from the University of Exeter Medical School, said: "These discoveries give us important clues to the mechanisms responsible for the control of a baby's growth in the womb, and may eventually lead to a better understanding of how to manage growth problems during pregnancy."

Together, the newly identified genetic regions have a surprisingly large effect on birth weight when compared with known environmental influences. Dr Inga Prokopenko, co-lead author from the University of Oxford, explained: "Birth weight is subject to powerful influences from many environmental factors. It was a surprise to see that the genetic effects in combination have a similar impact to that of maternal smoking in pregnancy, which itself is well known to lead to lower birth-weight babies."

The findings are published online today in the journal Nature Genetics. The international research team was led by scientists from the UK, Finland, the Netherlands and the USA.

Struan F A Grant, associate director of the Center for Applied Genomics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and one of the study authors, said: "This study demonstrates that genes acting early in development have important effects on health both in childhood and beyond. While we continue to learn more about the biology, an important implication is that designing prenatal interventions to improve birth weight could have lifelong health benefits."
