Karl is joint winner in Parliamentary archery competition

Local MP, Karl McCartney, proved himself a Parliamentary hotshot when he took part in an archery tournament at Westminster on Monday, 5 September.

Indeed, such were his skills with a bow and arrow, that Karl was the tournament?s joint winner, earning himself ?225 to donate to a local archery club. Karl tied with Robert Goodwill, Member of Parliament for Scarborough, and they took the lead from a Nottingham MP, leading to references of Robin Hood and his link to Lincoln Green.

Karl said: ?It was really good fun and I really enjoyed it, and to emerge as the joint winner among all the MPs who came along and took part was very exciting ? even more so, because it means I can now donate some money to a local archery club!

?It was my first experience of formal archery, and it was great to have some personal coaching from Great British international archers, including Nicky Hunt, who?s hoping to take part in next year?s Olympics.

?The top archers make it all look so easy, and when you try it yourself you realise how talented the internationals must be ? I shot my arrows from less than 10 yards, they shoot theirs from 70, and I am full of admiration.

?Archery?s great fun, and very addictive ? once you start you keep wanting to go back and improve your score.?

The event?created Parliamentary history? as the first sports event to be hosted on the Speakers? Lawn. It was held to celebrate Archery GB?s 150th anniversary celebrations, and to promote the sport ahead of next year?s Olympics.

Only recently archery came out on top in an AXA sponsored opinion poll of young people throughout the country when asked about the Olympic sport they would most like to take up if given the chance.?Archery received 27 per cent of the vote in that poll, nine points more than swimming, which came second.

The archery tournament at the London 2012 Olympic Games takes place at Lords, between July 27 and August 3.
